Robert F. “Bob” Snodgrass, Jr. September 25, 1942- April 24, 2007 On the evening of April 25th 2007
while at home Robert F. Snodgrass, Jr. Bob Snodgrass called Jacksonville,
Florida his home for the past 35 years and was an integral part of
Jacksonville’s businesses and philanthropic community as well as a
legend in sports car racing in America and around the world. As President of Brumos Motor Cars (Mercedes-Benz), Brumos Porsche, and Lexus of Jacksonville, Bob ran one of the most successful automotive groups in the nation. His dealerships continually won top honors from the manufacturers as well as the Jacksonville community. Brumos Motor Cars, Inc. was named by Mercedes-Benz as “Best of the Best” Brumos Porsche awards included the distinction of “Premier Dealer” for 16 years Lexus of Jacksonville has been “Elite of Lexus” for 14 years Brumos was nominated as one of Jacksonville’s “Best Places to Work” for 2006 and 2007 Bob Snodgrass was Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office “Citizen of the Year” for 2007 Jacksonville Cultural Council Corporate Award for 2007 Sports Illustrated A.I.A.D.A. Dealer of the Year 1994 (one of five) Bob Snodgrass was a true believer
in a business’s responsibility to give back to the community. There were many charities that Bob and Brumos championed: • RITA (Research is the
Answer) to prevent and cure Breast Cancer Snodgrass was an icon of sports car racing in the United States and Europe. Bob’s racing career started in 1948 at his first race at Watkins Glen, New York as a spectator. The rest of his career and contributions are staggering in numbers. Some of his more notable achievements: Team Manager, Brumos Racing 1991-1994 all resulting in championships for Porsche. 1996 1997 1999 2000 and 2001 Watkins Glen International made a special tribute to the life of Elmira, NY native Robert "Bob" Snodgrass during the Grand-Am Rolex Sports car Series presented by Crown Royal race on the Sunday 9th June, at the Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen. "This was an emotional weekend for the team," stated Dan Davis, Chairman of Brumos Racing. "He was very fond of Watkins Glen, because of his roots. The team misses him and would like to 'win one for Bob' that weekend." Bob Snodgrass fell in love with racing when he witnessed the first post-World War II race in the United States in the village streets of Watkins Glen in October of 1948 - known as "the day they stopped the trains." He and Mike Culucci, crew chief of the No. 58 Brumos/Redbull Porsche Riley Daytona Prototype, grew up together in Elmira, NY and continued to share their passion for racing throughout his life. Bob moved to Florida in the 70's to run Brumos Motor Cars Inc. where he became highly involved in the success of the Brumos Racing team consisting of the No. 58 and No. 59 Brumos Porsche Fabcar Daytona Prototypes that will compete in the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series race this weekend. He was s strong supporter of racing at Watkins Glen International, was a vice-chairman of the Board of Advisors of Grand-Am, and was a founder of the International Motor Racing Research Library located in Watkins Glen. He passed away on April 24th at his home in Jacksonville, Fl at the age of 64. The track will handed out commemorative flags to fans and teams attending this weekend's Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen to wave on laps 58 and 59, of Saturday's race in memory or Bob Snodgrass and as a tribute to his life. While the racing action will continue during these laps, fans also gave a moment of silence during lap 59, as they continue to wave the flags during the race. "Bob was not only a good friend of
The Glen but truly supported our efforts to reestablish the importance
of sports car racing at Watkins Glen International," stated Craig Rust
President of Watkins Glen International. "This is a way for our fans to
honor his legacy in both racing and the community."

Bob Snodgrass was inducted into the Legends of Daytona section of the NEXTEL FANZONE at Daytona International Speedway in a special and surprise ceremony on Friday of last weekend's Rolex 24 At Daytona 2007. Snodgrass, owner of the No. 58 Red Bull Porsche Riley and No. 59 Brumos Racing Porsche Riley that both showed well in the Rolex 24, was told that he was being taken to a last-minute emergency meeting. Instead, he was escorted to the Daytona Legends area where a group of teammates, friends and close colleagues - inlcuding Hurley Haywoood, JC France, David Donohue, Darren Law and other Brumos drivers - were part of the surprise induction. Daytona International Speedway President Robin Braig did the honors while Grand-Am President Roger Edmondson was among the well-wishers on-hand.
Snodgrass has an incredible racing history including three Rolex 24 At Daytona victories and 10 total wins at "The World Center of Racing." He was a driving force behind the formation of Grand-Am and the Daytona Prototype class of the Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Special Reserve and serves as the Vice Chairman of the Grand American Road Racing Association's Advisory Board in addition to his stewardship of Brumos. The Legends of Daytona is similar
to Walk of Fame or Wall of Fame areas seen at other popular sports
entertainment venues. Honorees - who have their achievements showcased
in special presentation boards that remain on display year - round, are
racers from all facets of the motorsports world who have made a
significant contribution to Daytona International Speedway. Two-time
Rolex 24 At Daytona champion and sportscar legend Brian Redman was
inducted last year.
Bob recently served as Vice Chairman of the Grand American Road Racing Association, was past Chairman of the United States Road Racing Championship and a Director of the Automobile Competition Committee, United States (ACCUS). |
