Brumos Racing Brings Back Leitzinger for
Watkins Glen Enduro
When it comes to endurance racing
strategy, it’s hard to argue with success, and no team in GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car
Series presented by Crown Royal Cask No. 16 competition can match the record held by
Brumos Racing. Drivers for the well-known team can claim a lengthy list of endurance racing
victories through the years. Current day Brumos #59 drivers David Donohue and Darren Law took
the Brumos colors into Victory Lane in Daytona’s 2009 Rolex 24 in the closest finish in
the history of that race. Donohue and Law returned to defend that Brumos championship in 2010,
joined by an all-star lineup of other previous Rolex 24 champions.
Along with Brumos legend Hurley Haywood, that group included Butch Leitzinger, who has three Rolex 24 wins
to his credit. Borrowing on
their strategy from the Rolex 24, the #59 team elected to add an
additional driver for The Six
Hours of the Glen, the only remaining endurance event this season.
Leitzinger proved himself
capable in the Porsche Riley at the Daytona season-opener, delivering a
strong
performance and leading the
race at one point during his stint. When the time came for Brumos to select an extra driver for the Glen,
Leitzinger’s qualifications made him an obvious choice for
the honor.
“I’m thrilled to be
joining Brumos again,” he said. “I thoroughly enjoyed driving with the
team at Daytona earlier this
year and look forward to returning. I grew up admiring the Brumos name, from the 1970’s when Peter Gregg and
Hurley Haywood were winning everything, to the 1990’s when Hans Stuck and Hurley Haywood were
winning everything! I had very high expectations of the team when I joined them for the
Rolex 24 and they didn’t disappoint. It is obvious that every member of the Brumos team takes
their position in such a historic and successful group very seriously. On top of all that, I
also get to drive alongside David Donohue and Darren Law once again.
Those two always run flat out, from the first practice session on. I
just hope I will get a chance
to make a contribution that can match them.” Heading into Round 6, the Rolex Series
marks the mid-point of the 2010 season, and the competition remains fierce. Brumos has
their work cut out for them getting the #59 back on track just days following a difficult race at
Lime Rock. In that race, a GT car hit Donohue, who was in 4th place and mounting a challenge in the
final laps. The contact resulted in a broken pushrod and sidelined the car, causing it to fall
back into 10th place. Despite the disappointing result, work
began immediately to get the
car repaired and ready for the 6 hour event as the team headed straight to the Glen to better prepare.
The Lime Rock result dropped Brumos to third place in Team Points, but merely strengthened the
team’s determination to make up the lost ground.
Brumos has long
considered the Glen as a favorite track and would like nothing more
than to deliver another
thrilling finish for their family and friends in the Elmira area. Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen will be
held on Saturday, June 5th. The race will start at 2:00 PM ET with the first two hours covered live
on SPEED TV. The broadcast will resume at 6:00 PM with coverage through the conclusion of
the race.
