112,000 square-meter
built-up area – Investment of over 100 million Euro
Laying
the cornerstone of the new Porsche spare-parts warehouse in Sachsenheim
Stuttgart. Official green light for the new location:
In the Eichwald industrial area of Sachsenheim (in the administrative
district of Ludwigsburg), Member of the Porsche Executive Board,
Michael Macht, and the Mayor of Sachsenheim, Bietigheim-Bissingen,
Oberriexingen und Sersheim (united as part of the Eichwald
administration union) today laid the cornerstone for a new central
spare-parts warehouse. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG of Stuttgart,
Germany, is to construct the premises on a 26-hectare lot. The
necessary investment amounts to over 100 million Euro. Porsche plans to
have the first warehouse building, with a surface area of 40,000 square
meters, up and running by spring 2008. In a second stage of
development, another warehouse area with a built-over space of 72,000
square meters is to emerge by 2010. In total, 80,000 articles from
current and old vehicle generations will then be stored here.
“Since we are unable to further
expand our existing warehouse location in Ludwigsburg, but at the same
time face a constant increase in demand for spare parts as a result of
increasing sales figures and a broader product range, there is no
avoiding the need to reorganize our spare-parts logistics and introduce
lean operational sequences”, said Michael Macht, responsible for
Production and Logistics on the Executive Board of Porsche AG. He went
on to explain that Porsche had therefore looked into various location
variants, both in the greater Stuttgart area and in other regions in
Germany.
According to Macht,
Sachsenheim’s greatest asset was the size of the area available. This
means the sports car manufacturer can make reliable plans for 2010 and
beyond. Another deciding factor was the proximity of the suppliers,
many of whom are based in Baden-Württemberg, and the connections
to international air- and seaports: “The end result is short distances
to the 650 dealers worldwide – which is advantageous both economically
and ecologically“, explained Macht. Another bonus in Sachsenheim is the
excellent transport connections via the new beltway to the A 81 freeway.
Macht emphasized
that this
business is one of Porsche’s proven core competences: “As a premium
manufacturer especially, we feel duty bound to ensure optimal parts
provision to our customers all over the world.” He is working on the
assumption that, once the second stage of construction is complete,
around 350 skilled personnel will be employed in the spare-parts
warehouse in Sachsenheim.
Horst Fiedler, Mayor of
Sachsenheim and Chairman of the Eichwald administration union, is
pleased that the construction will secure additional jobs in the
Stuttgart area: “In its choice of location, Porsche has proved that the
company cares about Germany and Baden-Württemberg in particular,
and that investments here really do pay off. We look forward to working
in cooperation with this sports car manufacturer.”
The latest spare-parts
warehouse will have a look characteristic of Porsche, featuring a
transparent building structure that will create a pleasant working
environment with plenty of light inside the warehouse. The materials
used meet the latest environmental standards.
