Sigma-Supercup Photo Competition

Porsche pilots pick photo of the year

Supercup Photo of the Year 2008Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, has sought and found the best photo of the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup. In cooperation with the world-leading independent lens manufacturer Sigma, Porsche ran the 2008 Sigma-Supercup Photo Competition.

At each race weekend, the most unusual photograph highlighting the world's fastest international one-make series was awarded. The “Supercup Photo of the Year” was won by the motorsport photographer Andreas Beil (Germany). The 39-year-old has worked in Formula 1 for the last eleven years.

At the final round of the Supercup, the 30 entered drivers chose Beil's picture with a six-vote lead over the second place-getter. A total of twelve drivers voted for the photo with the title “Airborne” which was taken at the sixth round in Magny-Cours (France) with a shutter speed of 1/2000 seconds and aperture 8. It shows the Italian Alessandro Zampedri with just one wheel of his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup touching the surface.

On the following places were the pictures of motorsport photographers Charles Coates (6 votes), Thomas Lam (6), Peter Nygaard (4) and Daniel Reinhard (2). It pays to focus on Porsche. As the main prize for the “Supercup Photo of the Year”, Beil received the brand-new Sigma lens 200-500mm F2.8 APO EX DG worth around 25,000 Euro.

“The photo was not a coincidence,” said Andreas Beil. “It was planned and aimed for. I knew without doubt that this location in Magny-Cours was where you could shoot particularly dynamic and action-packed photos. Still, I spent the entire 45 minute qualifying session getting this particular shot.

Oliver Hilger, photographer Andreas Beil, Jens Walther (from left to right)In the end I actually got three photos that I thought were good. But the shot of Zampedri in the air was the most beautiful of the lot. I think it's fantastic that the drivers found this photo great and that I won with it. There were many other wonderful and aesthetic pictures besides this.”

The photo of the 2008 year as well as the other nine “Photos of the Weekend” can be seen on the Porsche website www.porsche.de. All pictures entered in the competition are presented on the internet website of series partner Sigma under www.sigma-foto.de.
