September   2007                                     Porsche Artist Paul Holroyd

Tucked away in small town of West Yorkshire England is the small but humble home of Porsche Motorsport artist Paul Holroyd. This months feature we look into the inside and private life of this renowned Porsche artist.

Paul's work as grown and come collectable very quickly within such a short time, and many teams and drivers have one or two of Paul's original works hanging on there walls.

Paul first realized his love of art at an early age which led him to taking 0 level art at school, and having 2 paintings selected for display at Leeds art gallery from a plethora of entries from several West Yorkshire schools. After leaving school his dream of pursuing a career in movie animation fell by the wayside and after trying his hand at auto mechanics and then several managerial jobs in the leisure industry to support his young family he settled into a job at engineering firm Yorkshire Rubber Linings where he still works today as a Quality Health and Safety manager.

Paul got back into painting in 2003 when Bev, his wife, bought him paints and materials for his birthday after hearing him mention on more than one occasion over the years how he used to enjoy it so much and has never looked back since. Paul has fused his love of painting and motorsport to create breathtaking quality images of his iconic car the Porsche and to date has commissions from British race team P.K. Sport and American team Petersen / White Lightning, the racesite.com, Strasse Porsche Leeds,The American Le Mans Series, race driver Patrick Long and Seikel Motorsport under his belt not to mention countless privet commissions.

Why Porsche

I remember watching the film Condor Man and seeing the three Porsche 911's and since then I have loved the Porsche 911. My passion for motorsport was also down to a film the old classic Le Mans, again that's why the 917 is still my old-time favorite Porsche Race Car.

Never too late to start

Many people ask me the same question "how come you have only been painting motorsport for for the past four years" It was one of those things that you state time and time again for years and years, I had told my wife Bev more than once that I would like to start painting again but I never did anything about it that was until Bev bought my paints, brushes and paper one year for my birthday. Since that that day I have never looked back I just wish that I had started early.

Paul's Studio

Paul at workIt's hard to believe but all the paintings that I have produced have been created at home in the kitchen, We have a lovely old fashioned kitchen with a huge brick fire place with a old pot wood burning stock in the middle and old oak units. It's my favorite place in the house and I find it relaxing Bev does complain from time to time that I have taken over the kitchen.
I would love to have my own studio but the pennys would not stretch that far.

Inspiration

I have many inspirations that help me paint. I listen to the radio when painting mostly a local station called Real Radio They play a good mix of old and new so I like that. My pet dog "Jack" also is a inspiration to me he always sits be my feet whenever I am painting.
My mum died at a early age when I was young and she was always good at art, I used to paint with her and she alway said that she wanted me to do something with my skill of painting so apart from my wife Bev my mum has to be the biggest inspiration.

Achieving success

When I first started painting motorsport I contacted a number of teams and drivers regarding my artwork, this was mainly just to get some feed-back on my artwork. Dale White of Petersen Motorsport White Lightning Racing was very interested and since that day we have remained friends. Dale few original of mine along with a couple of prints in his home. Dale was a big help along with Tom Moore in starting the ball rolling for my with motorsport art and I have a lot to thank them for that.

Employment

Paul used to work on the PylonsPaul still works full time has a Health and Safety and Quality assurance manger for Yorkshire based engineering company "Yorkshire Rubber Linings Ltd" "I still work full time and enjoy my place of work, of course I would rather be painting full time but unfortunately I would have have to charge a fortune for my paintings to compensate my full time wage and would not be fare for anyone wanting own one of my arts I try and make it affordable for all motorsport fans.

Paul has a HGV Class two LicenceYou name it and Paul's done it.. leaving school Paul went to college studding mechanics and parts administration, he even did is part for Queen and Country serving in the 4th Battalion Parachute regiment for two years. although he trys to forget it he also sold double glazing before landing himself a management job for a large leisure company managing night clubs, bars and snooker halls, Paul then furthered is management career working for parcel delivery company White Arrow Express before leaving to try is hand back in the pub trade, Unfortunately this was short lived and Paul decided to try something completely deferent and started working as a Lines-man on the overhead power line pylons in Scotland. Paul also has a full HGT Class two heavy goods vehicle license.
