We asked Chris
Hobson Senior racing marshal some questions of our own.
Q, How old do you have to be
before you can become a marshal and do you know of the youngest member
Age 16 to work trackside, normally 14 to work in the paddock or other areas where the public has access
Q, Who is or was the oldest member
Not sure on this one. I know we have one or two over 80’s members still active.
Q, We know that you do not get paid do you also have to pay for your traveling and expenses
Marshals get no payment at all. Some clubs hold prize draws, some give a £5.00 note as a thank you, others offer lunch vouchers etc for the circuit canteens. Some of the kart clubs now pay up to £45.00 per day but these are the exceptions to the rule
Q, What is the highest level a marshal can go to
There is no limit. Members have risen to Clerk of the Course for Grands Prix and other international level events, as Stewards at all levels of the sport (like myself), and our members currently include a large number of this countries very senior officials. We also have representatives on Motorsport Association committees.
Q, Can you marshal at any event anywhere in world at any level
Absolutely. UK marshals work at all circuits, all events, world wide. We have recently provided the senior officials and marshals for the GP Masters series around the globe, and a growing band always work at the Australian GP.
Q, 24 Hours of Le Mann's is the event that every driver and team what to take part in... is this the same for the marshals
Yes – a large contingent of UK marshals regularly marshal the event
