Team Hardpoint EBM Porsches Split IMSA Weekend at Laguna Seca, Indianapolis

Team Hardpoint EBM will go to battle in both the Midwest and on the West coast this weekend, where the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship races at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca and the team’s two Porsche Carrera Cup North America cars make a stop at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The pair of events, running in two different locations September 10 – 12, include a single event for Rob Ferriol and Katherine Legge’s shared No. 88 Richard Mille/GridRival Porsche 911 GT3 R on the west coast while Riley Dickinson’s No. 53 Porsche Austin/Team Hardpoint EBM Porsche 911 GT3 Cup and Efrin Castro’s No. 65 Fine Fare Supermarkets/GoDominicanRepublic.com Porsche 911 GT3 Cup stop off in Indianapolis for a tripleheader on the road course.

Ferriol and Legge will race in the GTD class of IMSA’s top championship in a two-hour, 40-minute race on Sunday, September 12 beginning at 1:10 p.m. PDT and can be seen live on NBCSN and via TrackPass on the NBC Sports app. Dickinson and Castro’s 45-minute tripleheader races take place at 4:15 p.m. EDT on Saturday, September 11 and 8:45 a.m. EDT and 3:30 p.m. EDT on Sunday, September 12, with all races streamed live on IMSA.com/tv.

Both Ferriol and Legge have had success at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Legge was the 2018 winner in the GTD class, while Ferriol just missed the podium with a fourth-place finish in 2019 in Michelin Pilot Challenge. A week later, Ferriol earned a pair of runner-up finishes in his class of what was then Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge.

With four races remaining in the season, including Laguna Seca, Legge sits 10th in the WeatherTech GTD Championship standings with Ferriol just behind in 11th.

Dickinson and Castro enter the Carrera Cup North America weekend with a chance to make up some ground in their respective championship races. With three races upcoming and eight races remaining in the season, Dickinson sits fifth in the Pro Class and fourth among Porsche Junior drivers and is coming off of a strong weekend at Road America where he earned a podium finish in race one and turned the quickest lap of the race in the second round of the doubleheader. Castro is second in the Pro-Am class, with a win and six total podium finishes in eight races this season.

"Any time you split the team geographically, you’ve got to take extra care to ensure you provide both sides of the house with all the resources required to go out and execute a successful race weekend,' Ferriol, the team owner in addition to his driving duties, said. "Admittedly, the perfect storm of simultaneous motorsport events occurring all across the US this weekend has forced some creativity on fly-in support elements of both teams, but I’m confident we’ve got the right packages going to Laguna and Indy and am anxious to cheer them both on!"

The race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the first official IMSA race at the track for both drivers, though each had a strong test just over a week ago at the facility.

The Indianapolis event is unique on the motorsports calendar. The weekend is a celebration of car culture, of Porsche sports cars in all of their forms, spanning seven decades with a packed schedule of motorsport action supported by themed, interactive displays of Porsche cars from the past, present and a little way into the future with the very latest new models making their public debut.

The WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca round begins for Ferriol and Legge late on Friday, with a 4:30 p.m. PDT practice session. A second one-hour practice is the last chance to make adjustments before qualifying at 1:05 p.m. PDT. That qualifying session sets the grid for Sunday’s race.

Meanwhile at Indianapolis, Dickinson and Castro will get a pair of practices on Friday and qualify at 11:05 a.m. EDT on Saturday. That qualifying session will set the grid for race one later that afternoon, with grids for the remaining two races set per the Porsche Carrera Cup rulebook.

Rob Ferriol, Driver, No. 88 Porsche 911 GT3 R: "WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca is one of those magical tracks that capture you right when you drive onto the property and make your way up the hill. You know you’re at one of the most storied tracks in the country. The elevation, the flow, the corkscrew, and those big letters on the hill – it’s just a great place to race. As a driver, I tend to enjoy the rhythm tracks, and this one is no different. The sand and the track surface are always challenging once the race starts there. Ironically, I think the harder compound front tire that we’ve struggled with a bit this year may well turn in our favor at a track like WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. That’s not to say tire degradation won’t remain a notorious variable in how we approach both setup of the car and our race strategy this weekend, but we are looking forward to seeing how it holds up for a big push from Katherine in that final race stint."

Katherine Legge, Driver, No. 88 Porsche 911 GT3 R: “I love racing at Laguna. The Monterey peninsula is a beautiful area and the track is one of a kind, especially with its famed Corkscrew corner. The sand makes for a unique racing surface and the track itself is so fun to race at. I am a sucker for elevation changes and this track takes the biscuit in that regard. I have had much success here, including my first IMSA pole, and I always love a track where I have stood on the top step of the podium! As a team we are coming into this race with a great deal of positive momentum. Even though it’s been a challenging year, we are trending up and are all as enthusiastic as ever to stand on the podium before the season is out. Hopefully this is the first race we do that.”

Efrin Castro, Driver, No. 65 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup: “I’m really looking forward to Indy. It’s an all-Porsche event, which is going to be awesome. I’ve got a lot of friends who are coming to see me from the old Cars and Coffee days. I’m just excited for it, it’s going to be awesome. It’s just a great weekend of race cars and Porsches.”
