Nico Müller celebrates first Formula E career victory
Nico Müller claimed his first victory in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in Saturday's race of the Berlin E-Prix. In doing so, he gave the Porsche Formula E Team a home success. Teammate Pascal Wehrlein finished the race in the German capital in 19th place after a puncture.
Jake Dennis from the Porsche customer team Andretti Formula E finished fifth, while Pepe Martí crossed the finish line in seventh place for Cupra Kiro. This meant that three Porsches finished in the top ten.
On the grounds of the former Tempelhof Airport, Müller started the 39-lap pit boost race from 6th place – he initially positioned himself in the middle of the field. After his mandatory pit stop, he used his energy advantage over his competitors and worked his way forward in the highly efficient Porsche 99X Electric. He was the first rider from the leading group to activate his Attack Mode, took the lead and subsequently pulled away. At the finish, his lead was just under five seconds.
Thanks to Müller's maiden victory in Formula E, Porsche maintains its lead in the teams' and manufacturers' standings. Pascal Wehrlein remained without points for the first time this season. The reigning world champion had started the race from the front row of the grid in Berlin. However, a puncture during the race threw him back to the back of the field and cost him the top position in the drivers' standings.
Return of the "Sau" livery
At the Berlin E-Prix, the two factory-owned Porsche 99X Electric will compete in the legendary "Sau" livery. With this special paintwork, Porsche is setting a visual highlight and bringing a crowd favourite back to the track as a thank you to the fans. The design has its origins in 1971, when the Porsche 917/20 competed in the "Pink Pig" look for the first time at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. A second appearance followed in 2018 – also at Le Mans: Michael Christensen, Kévin Estre and Laurens Vanthoor celebrated victory in the GTE-Pro category at the wheel of the Porsche 911 RSR. The winning car is on site in Berlin and offers fans the opportunity to experience it up close.
75 years of Porsche Motorsport in front of full grandstands
The first of the two races in Berlin took place in front of sold-out grandstands. As part of the home race, Porsche celebrates its 75-year motorsport history. Over the weekend, an exhibition of historic racing cars can be viewed, including models such as the Porsche 550 Spyder and the Porsche 917. On both race days, selected vehicles will complete parade laps on the track. Among the Porsche guests on Saturday were former Formula 1 driver Mark Webber and "Tatort" actor Richy Müller.
Racing for Charity
Under the motto "Racing for Charity", Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG is sending a strong social signal in the current Formula E season and supporting seriously ill children worldwide. For every race lap of the two factory-owned Porsche 99X Electrics, the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer will donate 400 euros to the non-profit organisations Kinderherzen retten e.V., Interplast Germany e.V. and the Ferry-Porsche-Stiftung.
On the occasion of the Berlin E-Prix, Formula E is joining the good cause: As part of its "Better Futures Fund", it is making a supplementary donation of 25,000 euros. With the funding program, the all-electric World Championship strengthens charitable organizations and projects in the countries hosting the races.
After Pascal Wehrlein and Nico Müller completed the maximum number of laps at the seventh race of the season in Berlin, the donation amount stands at 211,400 euros.
Comments on the Berlin E-Prix
Florian Modlinger, Overall Project Manager Formula E: "An incredible start here in Berlin at our home race, where we are celebrating 75 years of Porsche Motorsport. Nico's first victory with the factory team and in Formula E is something very special. The whole team executed the strategy perfectly and Nico drove a very strong race – especially in the handling of the tyres. On the other hand, Pascal unfortunately had a puncture. Tomorrow we'll attack again to hopefully score a lot of points with both cars. The support for us has been outstanding – from the fans, from friends and families of our team members and from colleagues at the factory. Many thanks to everyone for the support! But my special thanks today go to the team: everyone did a perfect job in a very complex race."
Pascal Wehrlein, Porsche works driver (#94): "That wasn't the result we had hoped for. We started well with 2nd place in qualifying, and our strategy of saving energy at the beginning was also the right one in the race. Shortly before the pit boost, I unfortunately had a slight contact that damaged the valve on the rim, which led to the puncture. That was basically the end of my race. But the decisive thing is that we were fast today. Congratulations to Nico! We were strategically taking a similar approach, so this was definitely the right direction. Sometimes you're just unlucky."
Nico Müller, Porsche works driver (#51): "I am incredibly relieved and extremely grateful for this victory. I haven't really understood the whole thing yet – especially on such a special weekend. Here in Berlin, they want to make the fans proud and also continue to write the story of the 'Pink Pig' livery. The fact that we managed to do this in this way today makes me very proud. Driving for Porsche is a big step in my career anyway. And then to win in the 69th race here in Berlin of all places – in the year of the 75th motorsport anniversary – is something very special. Thank you for the great support."
