Pascal Wehrlein takes the World Championship lead in Shanghai
At Sunday's race of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in Shanghai, Pascal Wehrlein took the lead in the drivers' standings. The Porsche works driver finished 4th after his victory the day before. Teammate Nico Müller crossed the finish line in seventh place. The Porsche Formula E Team thus reduced the gap in the team standings once again. Felipe Drugovich from the Andretti Formula E customer team finished the race in sixth place. The Brazilian had previously clinched his first pole position in Formula E. Dan Ticktum (Cupra Kiro) placed the fourth Porsche in the top ten in tenth place.
Due to the weather, the 28-lap race started behind the safety car. After three laps, there was a standing start. Wehrlein and Müller started from grid positions 3 and 5. By means of early Attack Mode activations, the Porsche duo reached the front and temporarily pulled away. When the asphalt dried on the Shanghai International Circuit, Wehrlein and Müller ultimately fell back to 4th and 7th place.
Felipe Drugovich extended a streak for Porsche with his pole position: For the sixth time in a row, a 99X achieved the fastest lap time in qualifying. After Shanghai and four races before the end of the season, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG leads the manufacturers' standings by 50 points.
The Porsche Formula E Team continues to occupy second place in the team standings. The factory team reduced the gap to Jaguar TCS Racing from 30 to 6 points. In the drivers' standings, Wehrlein benefited from the fact that main rival Mitch Evans was unable to start the race on Sunday. The German recently led the World Championships after Berlin. He is now 9 points ahead of Evans.
Racing for Charity
Under the motto "Racing for Charity", Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG is sending a strong social signal in the current Formula E season and supporting seriously ill children worldwide. For every race lap of the two factory-owned Porsche 99X Electrics, the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer will donate 400 euros to the non-profit organisations Kinderherzen retten e.V., Interplast Germany e.V. and the Ferry-Porsche-Stiftung. After Pascal Wehrlein and Nico Müller completed the maximum number of laps at the thirteenth race of the season in Shanghai, the donation amount stands at 338,800 euros.
Comments on the Shanghai E-Prix
Florian Modlinger, Overall Project Manager Formula E: "Overall, it was a successful weekend. Nevertheless, we are a bit disappointed with today's race result, considering how strong we were at the beginning. In races with changing weather conditions, there's little you can do if some competitors are playing poker and taking risks when setting up their cars. Congratulations to Lucas di Grassi on another Formula E victory! On Nico's side, we were able to sort out an issue after yesterday, after which his qualifying performance improved significantly. He was even fastest in his group – Pascal as well. That was impressive. Looking ahead to the title fight, it was a shame that Mitch couldn't take part in the race. We don't want to fight for the World Cup like this. Nevertheless, we leave Shanghai with a good starting position for Tokyo and London. A big thank you to the entire team for their excellent work – including our colleagues at the plant. The conditions this weekend were really difficult."
Pascal Wehrlein, Porsche works driver (#94): "Today I have mixed feelings. Our pace in qualifying was strong again and we had the chance for another pole position. However, we decided against playing poker when tuning for drier conditions. It was similar in the race: we were fast in the wet, but the track dried out too quickly. Others were faster than us. Nevertheless, we scored 12 important points for 4th place and a total of 40 this weekend."
Nico Müller, Porsche works driver (#51): "In qualifying, the car worked well in wet conditions. That was a good step forward compared to Saturday. We were the fastest in the group stage, but we didn't get the maximum out of the duels. At the beginning of the race, Pascal and I were in 1st and 2nd place. When the track dried, we got into trouble. Nevertheless, we scored good points today – even if it felt like more would have been possible."
