Pascal Wehrlein celebrates second win of the season in Shanghai
At Saturday's race of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in Shanghai, Pascal Wehrlein clinched his second victory of the season. The Porsche works driver had already scored world championship points by achieving pole position. Now he is back in second place in the drivers' standings.
Jake Dennis and Felipe Drugovich clinched 3rd and 4th place for the Porsche customer team Andretti Formula E. Thanks to the points scored by both Wehrlein and Dennis, Porsche was able to extend its lead in the manufacturers' world championship. Nico Müller finished the race in 10th place in the second factory-owned Porsche 99X Electric.
Wehrlein led the 30-lap race for long stretches. After a safety car phase towards the end, the German activated his Attack Mode in the rain and thus temporarily had all-wheel drive for more traction. He had a lead of 1.6 seconds until the finish. For the former world champion, it was the tenth victory of his Formula E career, and also his first in Shanghai. Following António Félix da Costa's success in 2024, Porsche won for the second time at the Shanghai International Circuit.
Wehrlein's teammate Nico Müller started from 14th place and finished the race in 11th place. Due to a time penalty for a competitor, he subsequently moved up to 10th place. The Swiss driver also scored a world championship point for the Porsche Formula E Team. It continues to rank second in the table.
Racing for Charity
Under the motto "Racing for Charity", Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG is sending a strong social signal in the current Formula E season and supporting seriously ill children worldwide. For every race lap of the two factory-owned Porsche 99X Electrics, the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer will donate 400 euros to the non-profit organisations Kinderherzen retten e.V., Interplast Germany e.V. and the Ferry-Porsche-Stiftung. After Pascal Wehrlein and Nico Müller completed the maximum number of laps at the twelfth race of the season in Shanghai, the donation amount stands at 316,400 euros.
Comments on the Shanghai E-Prix
Florian Modlinger, Overall Project Manager Formula E: "A great victory for Pascal after an impressive pole position. He has thus reduced the gap to Mitch Evans in the drivers' world championship. As a team, we have also slightly reduced the gap to Jaguar. Due to the rain and the high humidity, the conditions were difficult today - so a big compliment to everyone for the very good work, including our colleagues in Weissach. Nico also showed good pace in practice. In qualifying, things didn't go well. We need to find out what happened so we can improve for tomorrow. 3rd place for Jake Dennis and the Andretti team after the victory in Sanya means another strong result for our customers. Thanks in part to them, Porsche has extended its lead in the manufacturers' world championship. The goal for tomorrow is to score a lot of points with both works cars."
Pascal Wehrlein, Porsche works driver (#94): "A fantastic race at an important stage of the season. I couldn't be happier today – it was a flawless performance and the car felt great. The pace was very good and we implemented everything perfectly. I didn't even have to ride much in the slipstream to get by with the energy. So I was able to stay out of the chaos behind me. A big thank you to the team. There are still five races to go – so we'll do everything we can to score as many points as possible."
Nico Müller, Porsche works driver (#51): "I had some problems in qualifying. That's why I couldn't start further up the field. But the car clearly had potential, as Pascal proved. Congratulations to him on the victory and pole. Due to my problems in qualifying, I was stuck in the field. Nevertheless, I was able to make up positions. However, incidents, the pit boost strategy and unfortunate timing in our attack mode set us back. That wasn't the day I had hoped for."
