After Donington Park setback, Will Aspin focuses on Brands Hatch challenge

Will Aspin returns to Porsche Carrera Cup GB action this coming weekend (May 10-12) as he takes part in races two, three, and four of the 2024 season, at Brands Hatch in Kent.

Lining up on the grid this year with Eden Race Drive, the teenager from Florence is also sporting a new look on his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup machine as he sets his sights on the Pro-Am championship title.

Last time out Will had promising visit to Donington Park, as despite having no pre-season testing, he was quick in practice ahead of the weekend and followed up with fifth place in qualifying, albeit just a couple of tenths of a second from a front row Pro-Am start.

Unfortunately, both the weather and a technical problem with his car hampered race day, as heavy rain caused the cancellation of much of the morning’s racing, which meant only one of the two planned races would be able to take place.

Sadly, as Will came to the grid, marshals noticed fluid coming from his car, and he was pushed into the pit lane. The team topped his coolant and fluids up and sent him on his way, chasing down the pack, but on cold tyres and with the circuit damp in places, he lost the rear of the car, spinning off into retirement.

This weekend, he will have three races to contend with, as the cancelled event from Donington Park will be run late on Saturday afternoon, with two more contests held on Sunday. As ever, live coverage of both can be seen on ITV4 in the UK and around the globe on ITV Sport’s TikTok channel.

“We had no pre-season testing, aside from Tuesday, but that was just running the car in and cruising around. On Thursday, in practice, we did well – I just made a small error pushing too hard on new tyres – but we were at the front on new and old tyres. In qualifying we were only a few tenths off overall pole position, but I made a small mistake coming out of the chicane which cost me that time.

“It was unfortunate on Sunday as when we went to the grid, my car started overheating. We’re not sure why, but I was pushed into the pit lane, filled it up with coolant and water, and went out on stone cold tyres on a damp track. I pushed and with a bit of steering angle it just sent me off. It’s my mistake and I’ve learned from it and I’d rather it happened now than at the end of the year.

“The team did a very, very good job with Will Martin, getting him the win, and we know we can be there too. We have enough to challenge for the championship and that’s my expectation, as well as fighting with the Pros for overall podiums, so I will work extremely hard to make that happen.”
