Alex Buncombe claims the final race victory at the Esports Designs Invitational

With the Championship already wrapped up by Luka Berk, the battle for 2nd place which included 2009 Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button, in the standings took place for one last time as the five-race season drew to a close.

Qualifying third with teammate Alex Buncombe qualifying on pole, Button needed to keep up to the pace of Buncombe and Ross McGregor if he wanted to challenge for second in the standings.

Racing in the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4, Button showed his Formula 1 World Champion credentials by holding off the pressure from Munro in fourth, whilst lapping Donnington Park at a strong pace (the quickest out of all the drivers) and also managing to keep up to the pace of McGregor and teammate Buncombe who took the lead from pole.

Likewise, to the race before at Snetterton. Unfortunately, Button had to retire from the session, spoiling the former McLaren driver’s chances of second in the standings, with 20 minutes left of the final race of the season, as Alex Buncombe and Ross McGregor battled to the end, with second place on the line through the Melbourne Loop and up to the checkered flag. With Buncombe producing a classic drive at Donnington Park, leading every lap, and not succumbing to the pressure of McGregor behind him throughout the hour-long race.

McGregor who was the winner last time out at Snetterton, commended Buncombe on the race win saying that “Al fully deserved it, on the pace.” And that Donnington Park is a circuit which is “difficult to overtake unless you send it.” With McGregor admitting he waited for a “mistake” from Buncombe, which “never came”.

Meanwhile, race winner Buncombe, spoke about his love of the track and the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4, after the race, saying that he has “really enjoyed every race. Porsche is a great little car to drive.” Whilst also respecting McGregor for his “clean driving” as both drivers respected each other during the race.

Buncombe also could not “fault the whole series.” As could not eventual third-placed driver Regan Mitchell who mentioned that racing in the series, “has been really fun” and has been the “most fun” he has had “racing in a while” despite him only getting “used” to the Porsche in qualifying.

So, could there be another series of the Esport Designs Porsche Cayman Cup?

The message from the drivers and commentators certainly appears to be as though they would take up the opportunity to compete in the series again. Organiser and competitor, Steve Hindon, praising all involved and seeming optimistic yet announcing no plans for another series at this moment in time. Watch this space, is all we can say.
