Commanding Supercup debut victory for Mathys Jaubert in Hungary
Frenchman Mathys Jaubert (Martinet by Alméras) claimed his first victory in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup at the Hungaroring near Budapest. Delivering a flawless performance, the 20-year-old crossed the line ahead of Dutchman Flynt Schuring (Schumacher CLRT), who was once again the fastest rookie. Third place went to Israeli driver Ariel Levi of Team GP Elite. The title fight is revving up: Porsche Junior Alessandro Ghiretti, Robert de Haan and Flynt Schuring are now separated by a mere six points. Meanwhile, the second Porsche Junior, Theo Oeverhaus, suffered another unfortunate setback.
The sixth round of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup once again proved that the twisty Hungaroring circuit never fails to deliver thrills and spills. With overtaking opportunities limited on the 4.3-kilometre track just outside Budapest, the drivers in the 375 kW (510 PS) Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars threw themselves into the task – occasionally with a little too much enthusiasm.
Two incidents on the opening lap saw four cars eliminated from the race. First, the two Target 911 racers driven by Alexander Tauscher and Janne Stiak collided with Jaap van Lagen’s car in Turn 5. Then, at the exit of the chicane, Wouter Boerekamps, who had qualified fourth, spun off after contact with a rival. The safety car was deployed for a total of six laps.
When the race resumed on lap seven, fans in the grandstands and watching at home were treated to a commanding display from pole-sitter Mathys Jaubert. The 20-year-old Frenchman defended his lead, largely unchallenged, all the way to the chequered flag and secured his maiden victory in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. It also marked the first Supercup win for his team, Martinet by Alméras, since current Porsche DTM driver Ayhancan Güven triumphed at Monza in 2021.
“I’m over the moon,” beamed Jaubert. “My team did a fantastic job and put a perfect car on the track for me today. The race was difficult. Flynt Schuring was constantly pressuring me from behind, so I couldn’t afford to make any mistakes. I’m all the more delighted because we had a tough start to the season. That’s what makes this victory so special.”
Schumacher CLRT driver Schuring tailed Jaubert like a shadow but never had a real opportunity to launch an attack. “I got off to a good start and found myself briefly alongside Mathys. Then, unfortunately, the safety car threw a spanner in the works. After the restart, I managed to stay on Jaubert but couldn’t make a move, even though I closed the gap slightly towards the end of the race. Nevertheless, I’m very happy with the podium finish and the all-important points,” explained the 18-year-old Dutchman, who has further strengthened his lead in the rookie standings and now looks unstoppable on his way to securing the junior driver title in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.
Ariel Levi (Team GP Elite) also delivered another strong performance, finishing in third place. “I got off to a good start and immediately tried to put pressure on the guys in front of me. But I didn’t get any real attacking opportunities, so I focused on driving a clean race and securing a spot on the podium. I’m happy that it worked out,” said the Israeli, who finished ahead of his teammate Kas Haverkort.
In the battle for the overall standings, the top three have closed ranks. Robert de Haan (BWT Lechner Racing) and Alessandro Ghiretti (Schumacher CLRT), each with two wins this season, crossed the line in fifth and sixth place respectively, and are now separated by just four points in the championship. “It was a tough race. After the start, I became entangled in the pack and lost a few positions. Then I tried to fight my way back to the front, which is very difficult on this track. The fastest lap of the race shows I had the pace to be right up there, so I’m not entirely satisfied with the result,” admitted championship leader Ghiretti.
De Haan, who is second in the overall standings, expressed some frustration with the driving style of certain rivals: “I found some of the contact unnecessary. I tried to stay calm and focus on my own race. Overall, I got through the race well and scored some important points. I’ve narrowed the gap to Alessandro a little in the standings. It’s shaping up to be a tough title fight right to the very end.”
The duel for the title is increasingly shaping up as a three-way contest. With his second consecutive second-place finish, Flynt Schuring has closed the gap to just six points behind overall leader Ghiretti.
Meanwhile, the second Porsche Junior was once again the victim of a rough manoeuvre. In the chaos following the restart, Theo Oeverhaus was hit by Marvin Klein from France. The German Proton Huber Competition driver crossed the finish line in 14th place. The winner of the opening race at Imola slipped from sixth to eighth in the standings, and openly acknowledged the room for improvement: “No need to blame others. I had a car capable of winning here, but I didn’t get qualifying right. So, I’m going to focus on the things I can control in the upcoming races. Then hopefully, I can pull myself out of this current slump.”
“The race on the Hungaroring lived up to the promise of its starting grid,” commented Oliver Schwab, Project Manager Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. “I’m thrilled for Mathys Jaubert, who had an unfortunate start to the season. This weekend, he proved his high potential. I’m equally delighted for Philippe Alméras and his team, who had to wait four years for a victory. The top group in the standings has tightened up considerably. The final two races could hardly be more exciting.”
The seventh round of the 2025 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup will take place on 31 August as part of the Dutch Grand Prix on the dune circuit in Zandvoort.
