Home race podium for Wehrlein and gains in all standings for Porsche

World Champion Pascal Wehrlein finished second in Saturday’s race of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship Berlin E-Prix. It is the German’s first home race podium and his fifth podium finish of the season. The Porsche factory driver also claimed an additional point for setting the fastest lap of the race in the highly efficient Porsche 99X Electric.

Wehrlein’s teammate António Félix da Costa was set to also stand on the podium after crossing the finish line in third place. However, a penalty for contact with another driver dropped the Portuguese to tenth. Four Porsche drivers finished in the top ten with customer teams Andretti Formula E in eighth with Nico Müller, and Cupra Kiro in ninth with Dan Ticktum.

Porsche has regained the lead in the manufacturers’ standings and holds a five-point advantage over Nissan. The factory-run TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team has extended its lead in the Teams’ Championship to 30 points. In the drivers’ standings, Wehrlein has cut Oliver Rowland’s lead to 50 points and remains second with three races left.

The 41-lap race took place under wet conditions and saw the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT safety car out on track twice. All drivers had to take the mandatory 34-second Pit Boost pit stop for recharging 10% of energy with a charging power of 600 kW. For reference, the high-end, road-going Porsche Taycan Turbo GT charges with up to 320 kW. The 99X Electric race car and the road car share the CCS charging system (Combined Charging System), symbolising technology transfer from race cars to production cars. CCS charging enables gentler charging at home in addition to powerful rapid charging on the road.

Comments on the Berlin E-Prix
Florian Modlinger, Director Factory Motorsport Formula E:
“A very tricky day at our home race but overall a great result finishing P2 and P3 on track for Pascal and António. A five-second penalty put António down in P10 and lost him his podium, but we scored very important points. We have extended the lead in the Teams’ Championship from 10 points to 30 points. We have also taken a small lead in the manufacturers’ standings from arriving with a three-point deficit to leading by five. We still have a long way to go and there are a lot of points to collect. Overall, having four Porsche in the top ten is also a good result: one Cupra Kiro and one Andretti with Dan Ticktum and Nico Müller. Tomorrow we go again with the goal to extend the lead in both championships. Thanks for all the support from the families of people working for Porsche and Porsche Motorsport, and thanks to the spectators who braved the grandstands in these wet and rainy conditions.”

Pascal Wehrlein, Porsche factory driver (#1): “P2 in the end. It got very close and I wish the race was two laps longer. After the first lap, with the grid penalty, we were down to P10, but the pace was incredible. I just made my way to the front. We had a bit of a different strategy in the end with Attack Mode. It was super close. P2 means very important points for the Teams’ and Manufacturers’ Championships. Tomorrow is another chance and we will try hard to make the trophies golden.”

António Félix da Costa, Porsche factory driver (#13): “It was a solid day. We qualified in P6 and finished in P3, but unfortunately I made a small mistake while fighting my way to the front. I hit Jake Hughes. It was a really small touch but enough to spin him around. It was my fault; we got a penalty for it of only five seconds, but as the pack was very compact that means we finish P10 and lost the podium. I apologise to the team for that result and my mistake. Excluding that it was another positive day and we go again tomorrow.”
