Porsche Carrera Cup Asia starts new era in Shanghai as Porsche clinches SRO GT Cup victory

Porsche Carrera Cup Asia became the first One-Make Series to race the new Porsche 911 Cup (992.2) this weekend alongside the Chinese Grand Prix at Shanghai International Circuit, with Porsche also earning Am-class victory during Sunday’s SRO GT Cup race with Moritz Berrenberg at the same venue.

A record-breaking 30 car grid took on the season opener, which marked the championship’s 23rd year of competition, entering a new era by racing the Porsche 911 Cup (992.2).

Porsche Carrera Cup Asia Talent Pool Presented by Michelin member Naquib Azlan (Team Porsche Malaysia) continued his impressive form from the Official Test Days by taking pole position for both rounds, with lap times over two seconds faster than in 2025. However, at the start of the opening event, an on-track incident brought out the Red Flag, with the race not being resumed.

In accordance with Porsche Carrera Cup Asia’s sporting regulations, half points were awarded meaning Azlan claimed first, while the returning Lu Wei (Origine Motorsport) was classified first in Pro-Am. Roy Tang (EBM) and Jacky Wu (Porsche Own Retail 69 Team) took Am and Masters honours.

A reshuffled grid saw Rodrigo Dias Almeida on pole position for Sunday’s event, with the Wetrade X Phantom Global driver controlling the race to cross the line first, but he received a 10-second time penalty for a race start infringement, dropping him to eighth.

Guest driver Luo Kailuo earned victory for 610 Racing in his and the team’s home event, while Origine Motorsport’s Ling Kang secured maximum points in the championship, after an epic battle with Marcus Amand (BWT Shanghai Yonda) and Marco Giltrap (Team Porsche New Zealand), who crossed the line third and fourth respectively. Wang Zhongwei (Origine Motorsport) clinched the Pro-Am win, while Cao Qikuan (610 Racing) and John Shen (Modena Motorsports) wrapped up the Am and Masters honours.

Porsche Carrera Cup Asia returns on 11-12 April at Zhuhai International Circuit for Rounds 3 and 4 of the 2026 campaign.

SRO GT Cup

The second season of SRO GT Cup also got underway at Shanghai International Circuit this weekend, with Moritz Berrenberg earning Am victory on Sunday, while series debutant Yin Jin Chao ensured class points across both races.

Reigning Am-category champion Berrenberg took pole position for the opener and started strongly, maintaining his advantage until a puncture just past the halfway stage forced him to pit, as the #927 Maxmore W&S Motorsport Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport crossed the line eighth in class.

Climax Racing and Yin Jin Chao managed to move up a couple of positions on both the team’s and driver’s debut in the championship, as the Porsche Sports Car China driver secured 10th in the Am category. Sunday’s event proved more successful for Berrenberg as he quickly advanced into the lead of the race during the opening corners, producing a dominant performance on his way to Am-class victory and fifth overall.

Jin Chao improved on his maiden result by gaining an impressive six places at the wheel of the #222 Climax Racing Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport, clinching an Am sixth place. SRO GT Cup is back in action on 9-10 May at Zhuhai International Circuit, before consecutive rounds on the support bill of GT World Challenge Asia.

Moritz Berrenberg, Maxmore W&S Motorsport: “The opener was frustrating as I had a puncture while leading the Am-class and had to settle for eighth. However, Sunday’s event was much more positive as I moved into the Am lead through the opening corners. From there I managed to take Am victory as well as battling with Silver drivers around me, crossing the line fifth overall. A huge thanks to Maxmore W&S Motorsport crew for all their hard work once again as they help me to improve.”

Yin Jin Chao, Climax Racing: “This is my third time racing in the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport and I feel like I’m growing in confidence each time I drive the car. This is the largest scale GT4 event I’ve been a part of so I’m looking forward to continually learning throughout the season. A massive thanks to the team who were excellent all weekend and we’ll now aim to make progress ahead of the next round in Zhuhai.”

Alexandre Gibot, Managing Director Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific, Ltd.: “It was great to see Porsche Carrera Cup Asia and SRO GT Cup get their respective seasons underway in Shanghai, alongside the Chinese Grand Prix. It’s now the start of a new era in Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, with the new Porsche 911 Cup (992.2) in action for the first time. We’re pleased that the driver of car #21 is recovering in hospital after the incident on Saturday, as we wish him all the best. We saw some epic battles across both championships, with Moritz Berrenberg starting his SRO GT Cup Am-class title defence strongly, taking a victory on Sunday as well as Climax Racing and Yin Jin Chao making their respective series debuts.”
