Albin Wärnelöv changes team – aiming for a new title and development stage

Last autumn, Albin Wärnelöv won the Pro Am championship after great finals drama at Mantorp Park. Now he is changing teams and setting new high goals for his fifth season in the championship. "In addition to winning the Pro Am title again, I would like to compete for a place in the top five overall in both qualifying and races. It would be fun to succeed with that," says the 38-year-old from Jönköping.

You probably remember how Albin Wärnelöv secured the Pro Am title during the Grande Finale in Östergötland in September. In the last race of the season, he managed, with the help of Prince Carl Philip, to overtake teammate Kjelle Lejonkrans in the standings. Wärnelöv needed to have a driver between him and Lejonkrans and just like that it was when the prince overtook Lejonkrans and narrowly held off all the way to the chequered flag.

"The last laps were very intense, but it was a lot of fun and we also got good TV pictures. I'm proud that I managed to keep it together all the way to the finish after the safety car. It would have been so easy to brake or get a push from another car," says Wärnelöv.

Towards new titles

The title was actually Albin Wärnelöv's fourth in as many seasons in the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia. In 2022, 2023 and 2024, he was part of Micke Kågered Racing's team-winning team. Now the Småland native is aiming for new titles – and he is doing it in a new environment. In 2026, Albin Wärnelöv will compete for the Mtech Competition.

"We felt that we wanted to renew ourselves, gain new perspectives and take part in different knowledge. With this change, we want to find inspiration in both driving and set-up, among other things. We think it's exciting to try to develop all the time and with Mtech, who has been in the championship for a long time and has a huge amount of experience in it, we hope to be able to take the next development step. It will be exciting to see how far we can take it," says Wärnelöv and adds:

"At the same time, I would like to point out that we are very grateful for the help we have received during our seasons with Micke Kågered Racing. It's been a great school for us.

Perfect teammate

In Micke Kågered Racing, Wärnelöv's family team, including father Johnny and brother Johan, has driven their own car in collaboration with the team's engineers. The setup will be more or less the same now.

"Our family team will be integrated into Mtech. We take care of the car, which we own, and take care of the service on it.

But unlike at Micke Kågered Racing, where there was a lack of space, Wärnelöv's Porsche 911 GT3 Cup will be in the same tent as the team's other car, the one for newcomer Gustav Jonsson.

"We are very happy to welcome the reigning Pro Am champion to us in the Mtech Competition. With his experience and long experience, Albin will be a perfect teammate and I am convinced that we can contribute a few things for Albin as well to make the whole team faster. The goal is clear – to keep the Pro Am title and to challenge the boys and girls in the championship's Pro category, says team manager Magnus Karlsson.

Capitals

Albin Wärnelöv has high hopes for the team change. When we ask him what he wants to get out of it, he answers:

"A little more daytime shape on the car. In a unit regulation, you have to be perfect with everything all the time. We can get a little more help from Mtech there. Another thing is the conditions for the weekend, the grip on the track among other things and other details. It's both about development and the ability to optimize the car.

Last year, Wärnelöv finished eleven out of twelve races in positions 8-12 overall. The exception was race two in the premiere in Anderstorp where he struck with a fifth place, his best finish ever in the Carrera Cup.

Wärnelöv wants to get acquainted with that level more times next season. This also applies to qualifying, where he only managed to advance to Q2 (in the top eight) on one occasion in 2025.

Under the new team management, Wärnelöv hopes to be at the same level more often as during Kanonloppet in Karlskoga last season. He did miss Q2 then, but was less than seven tenths from pole position in Q1.

"If you can find a few tenths with new engineering knowledge at Mtech, you are in a pretty good position, I think," says Wärnelöv optimistically.
