Amand charges to stunning Grand Prix win

A STORMING drive through the field has seen Marcus Amand charge to the front to claim his second career Porsche Equity-One Carrera Cup Australia race win on Saturday at the Australian Grand Prix.

The TekworkX driver led a champions trio to claim victory following a series of passes that saw him scythe his way to the front.

Third at the end of lap one, Amand dispatched Harri Jones on the second lap before hunting down Dylan O’Keeffe and slipping past the reigning champ’s No. 1 Dexion Porsche with two laps to go on his pathway to an impressive victory.

Current or former Carrera Cup Champions filled the top three finishing positions with O’Keeffe and Jones following the current French champion to the line in another hugely competitive affair that saw TekworkX lead home GWR and McElrea in the top three.

Home-town hope Glen Wood’s strong weekend continued in fourth place aboard his Famous Insurance car, once again remaining in touch with the leaders late in the race.

Race one winner Clay Osborne was fifth to continue his strong points haul for the weekend while Sonic’s Angelo Mouzouris headed up a huge battle for the final spots in the top-10 as he raced to sixth.

Behind the Bob Jane T-Marts racer was Aaron Love, rookie Jake Santalucia, fellow first-year racer Max Geoghegan and Team Porsche NZ’s Tom Bewley, who was 10th having continued to work his way through the field.

Early dramas for David Russell saw him off the road on the opening lap, the EMA Motorsport / Hire A Hubby driver tumbling down the order to ultimately finish 13th.

With one race to come, Dylan O’Keeffe leads the standings heading into race three thanks to his consistent performance so far this weekend.

He’s just six points clear of Clay Osborne, while Marcus Amand and Harri jones are separated by the same margins in the battle for the final step on the podium.

In the Tech Specialist Pro-Am class, Matt Belford was dominant once again as he powered to his second win in as many races by 10 seconds.

Belford’s clean run to victory was helped by the fact the fight for second was furious, with Rodney Jane rebounding superbly from his race one disappointment to finish second – but not before he had to deal with sustained pressure from Matt Slavin, Jacque Jarjo, Dean Cook and Brett Boulton in a massive fight for the final step on the Pro-Am podium.

Belford comfortably leads the Pro-Am points battle for round honours heading into the final race, while Slavin and Cook are tied on points in the battle for the final step on the class podium ahead of Saturday’s final race.

That takes place at 6:40pm AEDT local time with broadcast coverage on Fox Sports and Kayo in Australia.
