Pascal Wehrlein becomes Formula E World Champion again with Porsche
Pascal Wehrlein has won the drivers' championship of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship for the second time. In Sunday's race of the London E-Prix, 14th place was enough for the Porsche works driver to clinch the title. Teammate Nico Müller finished the season finale in 12th place, while Jake Dennis from the Porsche customer team Andretti Formula E also failed to score points in eighteenth place. The British former world champion finished second in the World Championship, five points behind.
Wehrlein and Müller started the 35-lap race from 3rd and 4th place. However, both gradually fell behind. In the closing stages, Wehrlein and Dennis collided with a rival, causing both Porsche drivers to drop out of the points. Since both Wehrlein and Müller finished the race without points, the rival team Jaguar TCS Racing won the team world championship. Porsche had already successfully defended the third world championship title for the best constructor at the previous race weekend in Tokyo.
Wehrlein finished the past Formula E season with the most race wins: The 31-year-old German from Sigmaringen won three races. In addition, he shared the best result with six podium finishes and four pole positions. He remains the last German single-seater world champion since Nico Rosberg's 2016 Formula 1 title win with Mercedes-AMG. At the same time, Wehrlein shares a record with Frenchman Jean-Éric Vergne: only they have won two drivers' titles each in Formula E, which has been on the grid since 2014.
With the Drivers' and Manufacturers' World Championships, Porsche is maintaining its leading position in electric motorsport. The Porsche 99X Electric will go down in history as the most successful vehicle of the third Formula E generation: Six out of ten titles of the GEN3 era can be attributed to the racing car from Weissach. This also makes him the most successful single-seater driver in the history of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG. During the GEN3 era, the factory-owned Porsche Formula E team achieved 16 race wins. The customer teams Andretti Formula E and Cupra Kiro contributed a further seven victories.
Racing for Charity
On Sunday, it was not only about the last points and trophies of the season. Wehrlein and Müller also completed the last laps for this year's fundraising initiative Racing for Charity. In this way, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG combines sporting success in Formula E with social responsibility. For each race lap of the two factory-owned Porsche 99X Electrics, the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer donated 400 euros to support seriously ill children worldwide. Porsche will announce the final donation amount shortly. The funds will benefit the non-profit organizations Kinderherzen retten e.V., Interplast Germany e.V. and the Ferry Porsche Foundation. Before the announcement of the final amount, the sum is 449,200 euros.
Comments on the London E-Prix
Florian Modlinger, Overall Project Manager Formula E: "Second World Championship title for Pascal – a great result! It was a fierce race today, but we did it and clinched another title with the Porsche 99X Electric. A big thank you to Pascal and Nico for their efforts this season – and to every single person who worked on this project. You can be proud of yourselves, and I am proud of you."
Pascal Wehrlein, Porsche works driver (#94): "I'm incredibly proud of how we delivered at the weekend and how we withstood the pressure. In the first 15 races of the season, we set the bar very high; today we finished the job. I want to thank everyone in the team and everyone in the factory who helped build this race car. We are the most successful manufacturer of the GEN3 era and have achieved so many successes. I love my team. Simply everyone who works with me and believes in me. A very special thank you goes to Nico for his contribution. Tonight we celebrate!"
Nico Müller, Porsche works driver (#51): "That was a chaotic weekend. In the end, however, we won the title. Congratulations to Pascal and to the whole team. That was a very good season, even though we can certainly improve things. I'm very happy that we're finishing the season with two world championship titles and I'm looking forward to the new cars next season."
Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President Porsche Motorsport: "Two FIA world championship titles in the year in which Porsche celebrates 75 years of motorsport – we can all be very proud of that. Congratulations to Pascal on winning the drivers' title in a very difficult race. And once again, congratulations to everyone involved on winning the manufacturers' title in Tokyo, including our customer teams who have been instrumental in this success. Even though we missed out on the team title, Porsche is still at the forefront of electric motorsport."
