BRDC Rising Star Andrew Rackstraw retakes Porsche Carrera Cup GB lead
Andrew Rackstraw demonstrated exactly why he’s been selected for the prestigious 2026 British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC) Rising Star programme by scoring a double podium Porsche Carrera Cup GB finish – including victory in the first of two races at Silverstone – and retaking the lead of the Pro category after another stunning performance at the ‘Home of British Motor Racing’ in his Rosland Gold by Century Motorsport 911 GT3.
BRDC Rising Star is a scheme that identifies British and Commonwealth drivers (between the ages of 16 and 24) who look likely to continue on a successful motor racing career to one day qualify for full membership of the BRDC – like fellow South African racer and 1979 Formula 1 world champion Jody Scheckter. Past BRDC Rising Star members include current F1 drivers Lewis Hamilton, George Russell, Lando Norris and Alex Albon.
Rounds 13 and 14 of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB took place at the home of the BRDC, with the 1.85-mile Silverstone National Circuit going straight past the famous BRDC Clubhouse! This made the race weekend even more special – although all of Andrew’s focus was on scoring as many Pro category points as possible, maintaining his 100% points-scoring record, and retaking the lead of the UK fastest single-make racing championship.
Having qualified second on the grid in his Rosland Gold/Investchem/Sparco-backed Porsche with a 54.565 – just 0.062 off pole and at an average speed of 108.23mph – the 23-year old Cape Town driver started the first of two 30-lap races from the inside of the front row. After a great start, he took the lead on lap one and pushed hard to carve out an advantage – setting the fastest lap of the race on lap four, which was only four-tenths shy of his qualifying best (54.982 / 107.41mph). Such was his uncatchable pace that Andrew extended his lead on every lap to finish almost nine seconds ahead of second-placed George Gamble. With Angus Whiteside finishing third, it was the first all-podium Porsche Carrera Cup GB result for Century Motorsport.
Starting the reserve grid race two from fifth, Andrew made another good start from the outside of row three. He quickly moved up to third and took second at mid-race distance – only to lose that hard-fought place after locking up a wheel under braking. In a tremendously close and exciting battle, Andrew secured a double podium result at Silverstone after a masterful display of pushing hard for second place whilst simultaneously defending his well-earned third place – all this whilst nursing a car with a badly flat-spotted tyre.
The two results at Silverstone give Andrew a 10-point Pro category lead heading into the final race weekend of the series at Brands Hatch (4/5 October).
“What an honour to be selected as a BRDC Rising Star,” said Andrew.
“Leaving my home in South Africa and moving to the UK alone to pursue my motor racing dream has been an incredible journey so far, and to have this recognition from the BRDC is a great opportunity – and one that I’m determined to make the most of!
“To then race at the home of the BRDC made it a very special weekend, although the focus at Silverstone was very much on trying to retake the lead of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB.
“We qualified P2. I was pleased, because it was very close to pole and we knew that we had both a very good race car and a clear plan of what we needed to do in race one.
“It was a super tough fight on the first few laps. There were some very aggressive moves going on, but we managed to take the lead, set the fastest lap of the race and stretch our advantage to bring the car home in P1.
“With George Gamble finishing second and Angus Whiteside third, it was the first podium lock-out for Century Motorsport and a true testament to the team’s professionalism and expertise. It was great to give the team such an amazing result after all its hard work.
“We started fifth for the reverse grid race two and came through to finish third. I did have a bit of a lock up and had to nurse the car home with a massive flat spot on a tyre – but once again, the important thing was to finish ahead of Will Martin, my main rival in the Pro category, and that’s what we did.
“All in all, I’m super happy with my P1 and P3 results at Silverstone.
“Leading the Porsche Carrera Cup GB by ten points doesn’t change anything going into the season finale at Brands Hatch, as we’ll maintain the same race plan as we’ve had since the start of the season – and that’s to try to qualify on pole, win the races, maximise our points opportunities and keep it clean. It’s the title decider, but we’ll treat it like just another race weekend and work extra hard to prepare, just like we always do.
“I just want to take this opportunity to thank Rosland Gold by Century Motorsport and all my sponsors for making this an unforgettable season. I promise to continue to give it my all until the very end.”
