Championship battle tightens at Croft
Will Martin (Eden Motorsport), from Hastings in East Sussex, drove to victory in the first Porsche Carrera Cup GB race at Croft. Reigning champion George Gamble (Rosland Gold by Century Motorsport) from Nottingham won Round Eight, taking his first win of the season. Following the weekend in North Yorkshire, Martin and Andrew Rackstraw (Rosland Gold by Century Motorsport), from Cape Town in South Africa, are separated by a single point at the top of the championship standings at the season midpoint.
In the Pro-Am category, there were wins for local racer Max Coates (Duckhams Yuasa Racing by Graves Motorsport) from Richmond in North Yorkshire, and Oliver White (Eden Motorsport), with Coates extending his Pro-Am championship advantage. Jonathon Beeson (Duckhams Yuasa Racing by Graves Motorsport) from Crewe enjoyed a perfect weekend, taking a pair of category wins in Am.
Martin and Gamble victorious in Pro
Martin fended off challenges from Sid Smith (Team Parker Racing), from Maldon in Essex, and Coates to take pole position for the weekend’s opening race. Martin led at the start of Round Seven as Smith slipped back behind Coates. RAFA Racing Club Porsche Carrera Cup GB 2024 / 2025 Junior James Wallis (JTR) advanced three places to engage in a fight with Rackstraw for fifth. The pair diced through Tower, the Jim Clark Esses and Barcroft, with Wallis emerging ahead. However, on the following lap, Rackstraw attacked on the outside at Tower and there was contact – Wallis was forced to pit with a puncture while Rackstraw continued.
On the third lap, Smith overtook Coates on the inside at Tower to snatch second, and he then set after race leader, Martin. On lap eight, Gamble found a way by Coates at Tower for third overall. Smith then closed on Martin, forcing him to defend on several occasions. Despite his best efforts, Smith could not find a way through, and Martin took the checkered flag first. Smith finished close behind, and Gamble took his second overall podium result of the season. After the race, the winner drew the number five ball, reversing the top five grid positions for the weekend’s second encounter. Following the race, Wallis was docked two championship points for his incident with Rackstraw.
White began Round Eight from pole position. He led Coates and Gamble at the start of the race with Martin close behind. Gamble repeatedly tried to overtake White at Tower, but it wasn’t until lap 10 that he was able to get ahead with a move at the Hairpin. Race leader, Gamble, soon found himself leading a train of cars stretching back to eighth, but no-one could muster a pass in order to break the deadlock. At the flag, Gamble took his first win of the season, joined on the overall podium by Pro-Am category driver, White, and Martin.
Coates and White win in Pro-Am
Coates was fastest for part of Saturday’s qualifying session, ending the session third overall and top in the Pro-Am category. In the first race of the weekend, Coates was involved in the battle for the overall podium, but he would eventually slip back behind his Pro category rivals while retaining the Pro-Am lead. White was second with Will Jenkins (Team Parker Racing) from Stafford in third.
On lap four, Oliver Jackson (JTR) from Reigate in Surrey made contact with Josh Stanton (JTR) from Oxford, causing Stanton to spin at the Hairpin. As Jackson continued, he began to close on Jenkins, but the order remained the same, with Coates taking Pro-Am victory from White and Jenkins, the latter taking the first podium of his Carrera Cup GB career. White would start the weekend’s reverse grid race from pole position with Coates for company. Following the race, Jackson was docked two championship points for his incident with Stanton.
White led from pole position in Round Eight, and Coates found himself dicing with Pro category contenders Gamble and Martin. After Gamble overtook White for the overall lead, the latter retained the Pro-Am category advantage. Later in the race, Coates received a five-second penalty for track limits offences, relegating him down the order on corrected time. In the closing stages of the race, Jenkins closed on Stanton in their battle for eleventh overall, but he could not get ahead. White, Jackson and Coates formed the second Pro-Am podium of the day. However, following the race, Coates was handed a penalty for a false start, putting Coates further down the revised finishing order.
Beeson takes two wins in Am
Once again, Beeson qualified ahead in the Am category, and he maintained his advantage at the start of Round Seven, leading Carl Cavers (Century Motorsport) from Nottingham and William Paul (Team Parker Racing) from Buenos Aires in Argentina. The order remained the same to the chequered flag, with Beeson taking his fourth category win of the season. And it was a repeat in Round Eight, with Beeson, Cavers and Paul standing on the Am category podium steps.
