Pereira takes stunning trio of Porsche Carrera Cup Asia victories in Sepang Endurance Cup opener

Team Shanghai Yonda BWT’s Dylan Pereira wrapped up all three wins, as Porsche Carrera Cup Asia enjoyed an excellent weekend of racing, with 27 entries taking on the first round of the Endurance Cup at the Sepang International Circuit.

Under the lights on Saturday evening, the action got underway with pole sitter Pereira withstanding a spirited challenge from the returning Marco Giltrap (Team Porsche New Zealand) into Turn 1, as Phantom Global Racing’s Dylan Yip and Sime Motors Racing’s Hugo Ellis battled for the final podium position.

The championship leader brilliantly controlled the weekend opener, pulling clear to secure his first win of the event, with Giltrap firmly maintaining second place. Yip would hold off the early pressure from Ellis to take his third consecutive podium finish.

Bao Jinlong (BWT Phantom Global Racing) came back from qualifying fourth in the Pro-Am class to stand on the top step, producing an excellent overtaking display, while Liu Kai Shun (TORO Racing) and Li Xuanyu (Z.SPEED Motorsport) made up the remainder of the top three.

In the Am category, 610 Racing’s Cao Qikuan took a first pole position in the series, but was passed on the opening tour by class championship leader Munkong Sathienthirakul, who went onto record his fifth consecutive win of the campaign. Eric Kwong (Bergwerk Motorsport) delivered a brilliant comeback drive to secure second, while Qikuan settled for third.

EBM’s Adrian D’Silva wrapped up a home victory in the Masters class with Jacky Wu (Porsche Retail 69 Team) and John Shen (Modena Motorsports) coming second and third respectively.

The first of two races on Sunday started with Pereira lining up on pole again, this time alongside Enzo Trulli (TORO Racing), with the Luxembourger getting an excellent launch off the line to maintain his position. Giltrap quickly make his way past Yip as Team Wetrade x PGR’s Josh Rowledge also put himself in contention.

A Safety Car intervention just past the halfway mark neutralised the event and, on the restart, Pereira continued to lead. Just a handful of laps later, Giltrap passed Trulli with a great move into the final corner. The 1-2 from Saturday night repeated itself and the young Italian racer held onto third after constant pressure from Rowledge.

In the Pro-Am category, Bao and Kai Shun enjoyed a brilliant battle for the top spot throughout the race, but the latter would retire with a technical issue in the closing stages. Francis Tjia (OpenRoad Racing) and Team Betterlife’s Li Chao crossed the line separated by just over a second as they finished behind the championship leader.

Sathienthirakul took the lead from Henry Kwong (TRIPLE ACE RACING) into the first corner, and he looked to be on for another Am-class win, but was denied by a last-gasp overtake by Qikuan to snatch his maiden 2025 victory, with Eric Kwong taking the final place on the podium.

OpenRoad Racing’s Christian Chia secured his first Masters win of the season, beating out Shen as D’Silva battled back from contact suffered earlier in the race to finish third.

The 43 minute + 1 lap Endurance Cup event was halted on the opening tour after multiple cars suffered contact, including Pro-class drivers Amer Harris Jefry (Z.SPEED Motorsport) and Rodrigo Dias Almedia (Team Jebsen). When the race got back underway, Pereira continued to lead off the rolling start as Trulli made an impressive move through the opening sequence of corners to jump from fourth to second.

The Italian would defend hard against Yip throughout the event as Pereira drove off to secure a dominant lights-to-flag win, with Trulli and Yip maintaining their places to round off the top three. Sime Motors Racing’s Nazim Azman would finish just behind in fourth to ensure a strong result at his home race.

Bao Jinlong controlled the Pro-Am proceedings to wrap up his third success of the weekend to further extend his championship lead, with Xuanyu and Tjia joining the five-time champion on the podium.

Qikuan took his second Am-class win of the event after passing Sathienthirakul, with the 610 Racing driver also finishing in the overall top-10. Henry Kwong earned the final spot on the rostrum, and Simon Chan (Fire Monkey Motorsport), the best Endurance Cup newcomer, came fourth.

The Masters class suffered two DNS after Wu and D’Silva were both caught up in the opening lap incident, suffering damage which meant they couldn’t restart. Shen then overtook Chia in what proved to be the decisive moment for the Modena Motorsports driver, claiming his first win of the campaign.

Alongside the on-track action, Porsche Malaysia held the popular Porsche Esports Sprint Challenge and mixed in with the brilliant work of local importer Sime Motors Racing, helped to create great engagement with the fans throughout the event.

Porsche Carrera Cup Asia returns for Rounds 8-9 of the 2025 season at the Bangsaen Grand Prix on 4-6 July in support of Thailand Super Series, in what promises to be an action-packed street event.

Dylan Pereira, Team Shanghai Yonda BWT: “The whole team has done an incredible job for us to enjoy a weekend like this where we took pole position in both qualifying sessions and won all three races! Every event was different, so we had to adapt well, but the car felt amazing throughout. The Endurance Cup was very challenging with the heat, and we pushed the whole way. I’m thrilled with our performance, and we’ll go to Bangsaen aiming to replicate it.”

Bao Jinlong, BWT Phantom Global Racing: “The weekend was a challenge as I’ve been ill recently, so I’m delighted to win all three races in class! The Endurance Cup in particular was tricky with the heat inside the car and the extended distance, but it’s an amazing experience which will help me in the future. I’m now looking forward to next time out in Bangsaen and pushing the limits on a tight street track.”

Cao Qikuan, 610 Racing: “It’s great to take my first two wins of the season and I think we managed our tyres very well throughout the races. We learned a lot after dropping from first to third in the opener and put it right by coming through to clinch victory in the next two races. I was always aiming to just stay close with Munkong, and I had to wait patiently for my opportunity, but took my chance when I got it. A massive thanks to the team for their hard work this weekend to achieve this result.”

John Shen, Modena Motorsports: “I’m pleased to have gradually made my way up the podium places throughout the weekend and in the final round secured my first win of the season! I’ve felt strong throughout and knew that the key in the Endurance Cup would be to stay out of trouble and be sensible in the opening laps. This saw me move up into the lead after a great battle with Christian and to claim the victory.”

Alexandre Imperatori, Porsche Carrera Cup Asia Manager: “What an amazing weekend of action in Sepang with great racing throughout the field and a successful opening round of the Endurance Cup. It was extremely challenging for the 27 drivers as all three races were so different with one at night, another in the day and the third being a longer version as well as featuring a rolling start. That being said, it makes it even more impressive to see Dylan win all three rounds and Bao do the same in the Pro-Am class. The Endurance Cup proved a real physical test for the whole field, but the drivers loved this extra challenge! It was great to also welcome back the TTAP students to the pit-lane and we thank Porsche Malaysia for putting on activities such as its Esports Sprint Challenge. Overall, it’s been remarkable, and we can’t wait to go racing in Bangsaen next month which will be a spectacle in front of a packed crowd.”
