Proton Huber Competition celebrates two podium finishes and class victories

At the third race weekend of the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland, Proton Huber Competition finished both races in second place and won the rookie classification twice.

The third race weekend of the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland took place in Zandvoort, Netherlands. For the first time this year, the traditional one-make series was part of the DTM support programme. Proton Huber Competition fielded seven cars: in addition to regular drivers Robert de Haan, Marvin Klein, Sacha Norden, Colin Jamie Bönighausen and Joe Warhurst, the team teamed up with Fragus Motorsport to put the two Swedes Daniel Ros and Wilmer Wallenstam on the grid.

Qualifying did not go as planned for the team from Hofkirchen in Bavaria. Due to an unfortunate red flag, Robert de Haan qualified in ninth place in the first qualifying session as the team's best driver. Things went better in the second qualifying session, where de Haan secured second place on the grid.

The first race took place on a drying track on the GP circuit. Local hero Robert de Haan put on a spectacular show of overtaking and fought his way up to second place on the demanding track. The highly talented young driver missed out on victory by half a second. ‘I love these tricky weather conditions, it was great fun,’ said the young driver, who is almost two metres tall, at the end of the race.

Sacha Norden triumphed in the rookie classification. This was the young Dutchman's fourth victory of the season in the highly competitive class. ‘I didn't count how many battles I was involved in. I was able to quickly improve from third position to the top of the rookies. After that, I preferred to hold back in the duels with the drivers outside the rookie classification.’ Joe Warhurst finished second in the class. Marvin Klein and Colin Jamie Bönighauen also finished in the points.

Marvin Klein finished a strong second in the second race. The Frenchman drove through the rain at Zandvoort from eighth on the grid to finish on the podium after a strong comeback. It was a strong comeback for the fast Frenchman after a difficult seaspn so far. ‘A comeback like that is only possible in such demanding conditions. My car was also amazing today, I was able to attack at any time,’ said Klein, praising his team.

Daniel Ros also put in a powerful performance: the guest driver from Sweden fought his way from 16th on the grid to seventh place with a flawless performance in the most difficult conditions. Robert de Haan had a race to forget: after several penalty laps and a drive-through penalty, the 18-year-old finished twelfth in a chaotic race and was still able to score important points.

Christoph Huber's team celebrated another victory in the rookie classification on Sunday. British driver Joe Warhurst won the classification for newcomers to the traditional racing series for the first time. ‘Those were typical British conditions, perfect for me,’ laughed the 19-year-old from Sheffield after the race.

After three of eight race weekends, Robert de Haan is in second place in the overall standings of the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutsche. The driver with start number #46 is just four points behind the leader. The team from Hofkirchen is also in second place in the team standings. Sacha Norden and Joe Warhurst occupy the top two places in the rookie standings.

‘What a chaotic weekend in Zandvoort! The weather didn't make it easy for our drivers or for us as a team,’ explained Ajla Vukovic, who heads the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Germany programme at Proton Huber Competition together with Michael Dirsch. "Robert showed an incredible comeback in the first race. If the race had lasted just one lap longer, he would probably have been able to attack the winner. Unfortunately, Robert had a few penalties in Sunday's race, so a top result was out of reach. Marvin put in a strong performance, though, and finished second. Our Swedish guest driver Daniel also impressed in eighth place and surprised many! We are also delighted that Sacha and Joe won the rookie classification on Saturday and Sunday respectively."

The Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland will continue on the first weekend of July at the Norisring. The popular one-make series will be held at the traditional city circuit in Nuremberg for the first time since 2019.
