Porsche continues strong start to China GT campaign in Shanghai

Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific enjoyed a positive China GT weekend at Shanghai International Circuit, taking victories and podiums across the GTS and GTC categories.

Following his double win at the same circuit in the opening two rounds last month, Moritz Berrenberg continued to impress in the #927 Maxmore W&S Motorsport Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport in Race 1 securing class victory by a huge 11 seconds.

Yin Jinchao and Tony Yu Yuanlin were unfortunate to miss out on a podium, finishing just a few seconds away in fourth for Climax Racing, while RSR GT Racing’s Tian Weiyuan and Han Liqun scored fifth.

Meanwhile in the GTC category, Bao Junbin put in a solid race for 610 Racing to clinch second in class in the #62 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.

Sunday saw even better performances from the Porsche entries, with the marque locking out the GTS podium. Berrenberg extended his win streak to four with another dominant performance, as Weiyuan and Liqun earned second. Incipient Racing’s Archer Wu and Che Shaoyi bounced back from a DNF in Race 1 to secure a strong third, while Jinchao and Yuanlin picked up fifth.

In the GTC class, Junbin again showed good pace to take second in class once again.

China GT returns to action on 20-22 June when the series heads to Zhuhai International Circuit for rounds 5 and 6.

Next up for Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific is Porsche Sprint Trophy Thailand’s season opener, as Thailand Super Series kicks off its 2025 campaign at Chang International Circuit. Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific Selected Driver Dorian Boccolacci will also be in action in the ADAC 24h Nürburgring Qualifiers on the fearsome Nordschleife next weekend.

Moritz Berrenberg, Maxmore W&S Motorsport: “Yesterday was challenging in the hot conditions. Luckily the Safety Car helped me cool down a bit and I had a nice gap at the front of the GTS field. Today we had an exciting start, I was fighting with the GT3 cars in the opening corners which was fun. I slowly built the lead again and I’m happy to have taken both wins and continue my strong start to the season.”

Lenny Tian Weiyuan, RSR GT Racing: “I’m delighted with the result! A big thanks to Han for completing the first stint and handing me the car in the perfect position. The Safety Car helped me close the gap, and when we went back to full speed I seized the opportunity, making my way up to second. The focus was then on defending the position, which I managed to do all the way to the line. An incredible result!”

Ricky Han Liqun, RSR GT Racing: “It’s been a thrilling weekend for us and we’re so happy to clinch a trophy! While we were disappointed yesterday, we managed to turn things around in Race 2 despite starting further back on the grid. We made progress early on and pitted at exactly the right time before the Safety Car. My teammate pushed hard after that and made a decisive overtake to clinch second by a tiny margin!”

Archer Wu, Incipient Racing: “Unfortunately we got caught up in an incident in Race 1 and couldn’t finish, but we didn’t give up. Thanks to Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific’s spare parts support, the team worked hard to repair the car overnight. In Race 2, my goal was to complete my stint safely and hand over to my teammate, who managed to secure the podium!”

Che Shaoyi, Incipient Racing: “This was my first time driving the GT4 car on a Chinese circuit. The podium today was all Porsche, which shows how strong the car is. I found it really enjoyable and easy to drive, it was a lot of fun! Yesterday I was unlucky to be involved in an unnecessary incident, but today my teammate did an amazing job in the first stint. The Safety Car caused some chaos and I had some good battles, narrowly missing out on second. Overall, we performed well in a highly-competitive class and can be pleased with our efforts.”

Tony Yu Yuanlin, Climax Racing: “It’s been a long time since I last raced, so I’m really happy to have returned to the track with Porsche this weekend. I was also delighted to share the car with a good friend! Our goal was to keep improving throughout the weekend, which we managed to do, and the experience gained is a valuable takeaway from the event. I’m looking forward to being back on track, and we’ll work hard to improve for the next one.”

Yin Jinchao, Climax Racing: “This was my first time competing in an official race, and after testing two weeks ago in Shanghai, I decided to give it a try. The whole process required a lot of mental preparation, and I gained so much experience from it. Although we didn’t make it onto the podium, we finished the races and brought the car home safely. I pushed my limits throughout the weekend and I’m excited for next time.”

Alexandre Gibot, Managing Director Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific Ltd.: “I’m really happy with the performance of our customer teams and drivers this past weekend at the second round of China GT. Moritz Berrenberg continued his perfect season in style in the GTS category and has extended his Championship lead. Additionally we were delighted to lock out the GTS class podium in Race 2. To score podiums across multiple categories, against stiff competition, shows the ability of our entries throughout the field, which is very pleasing.  We are looking forward to pushing forward in the next round in Zhuhai.”
