Proton Huber Competition provides spectacle in Spa-Francorchamps
At the second race weekend of the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland in Spa-Francorchamps, Proton Huber Competition provided many spectacular manoeuvres and was ultimately able to celebrate a class victory, several podium places and important points.
Second round of the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland season. After the season opener in Imola, the popular one-make series once again made a appearance as part of the FIA WEC programme and raced at Spa-Francorchamps. In addition to the regular drivers Robert de Haan, Marvin Klein, Sacha Norden, Colin Jamie Bönighausen and Joseph Warhurst, Kai Pfister competed for the first time for the team from Hofkirchen in Bavaria.
Robert de Haan, who won both races in Imola, had to start the first race from the back of the field, as his fastest lap in qualifying was cancelled due to track limits and he was unable to set a fast lap due to a red flag. ‘After qualifying, I was most pleased that we would see a spectacular race, as I knew that Robert could make up a lot of positions,’ said Christoph Huber with a grin. And the fast Dutchman was able to fulfil his team boss's wish. In the 30-minute race, Robert de Haan was able to improve by strong 22 positions. However, due to a 5-second penalty, de Haan was ultimately classified in ninth place and was thus able to secure important points for the title fight.
Sacha Norden initially won the rookie classification in the first race, but was relegated to the second place in the class due to a subsequent time penalty. Joseph Warhurst completed the podium positions in the sub-class. Returning driver Kai Pfister was able to celebrate third place in the Pro-Am class in his first race with Proton Huber Competition, without having previously completed any test drives with the team. Marvin Klein was also in a promising position at the start, but was spun round in a chain reaction at a restart, dropped to the back of the field and fought his way back to 16th place.
In the second race on Saturday morning, Robert de Haan drove to third place in the final result. Marvin Klein finished the second race in tenth place after a 2-second time penalty. Sacha Norden finished the race in eleventh place and won the rookie classification. Colin Jamie Bönighausen was able to secure one more point in 15th place.
‘Even though we couldn't quite match the result from Imola, we are satisfied with the weekend's result,’ said Ajla Vukovic, who heads the Proton Huber Competition Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup squad together with Michael Dirsch. ‘Robert showed a fantastic fightback in the first race and finished on the podium in the second race. The whole team is also delighted with Sacha's class win in the second race and the two podium finishes by Sacha and Joe in the first race. It was also great that Kai was able to drive straight onto the podium on his return to the Carrera Cup Germany without testing!’
After two of eight race weekends, Robert de Haan leads the drivers' standings in the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland - his Dutch team-mate Sacha Norden leads the rookie classification. The third race weekend takes place on the first weekend in June in Zandvoort on the Dutch North Sea coast.
