Proton Huber Competition shows good speed in Budapest

The sixth race weekend of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup took place at the Hungaroring – good speed from Proton Huber Competition goes unrewarded.

The sixth race weekend of the 2025 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup season took place at the Hungaroring, which underwent extensive modernisation over the winter months. Proton Huber Competition lined up at the start with three Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars, driven by regular drivers Theo Oeverhaus, Jaap van Lagen and Gus Burton. After difficult races at the Red Bull Ring and Spa-Francorchamps, the Bavarian team wanted to show its true potential in Hungary and build on the speed it had shown at the start of the season.

The Porsche team showed that it was back on top in Friday's practice sessions, with Jaap van Lagen and Porsche Junior Oeverhaus taking the top two positions. In a close qualifying session, Oeverhaus from Lower Saxony also had a chance to take pole position, but a small mistake ruined his chances. However, with a gap of only 0.145 seconds, he had to settle for eighth place. Van Lagen and Oeverhaus followed in twelfth and 14th place.

In the opening lap, Jaap van Lagen crashed out through no fault of his own in a chain reaction, which was followed by a long safety car phase. After the restart, Oeverhaus was involved in close battles before he was spun around by another driver through no fault of his own and fell back to the end of the field. To the team's surprise, the driver who caused the incident was not penalised. The ADAC Sports Foundation protégé then drove back to 14th place with a lot of anger in his stomach and thus secured two points. Gus Burton finished the race in a strong ninth place and was able to score important points.

‘We are happy with the weekend, even if it doesn't look like it at first glance,’ summarised Michael Dirsch, who heads the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup programme at Proton Huber Competition. "Free practice showed that we have regained the speed we had at the start of the season. The guys had a good feeling with the car, and that was our main goal for the weekend! Theo had a chance to take pole position in qualifying. A small mistake in the chicane ultimately meant he finished eighth in what was a very close field. Our strategy for the race was to stay with the pack at the start, let the front runners go, which is usual for the early stages of the Supercup, and then capitalise on that. Unfortunately, Theo was taken out of the race by a third driver in a duel. What is happening in the Supercup at the moment and the decisions that are being made, which we have no influence over, are sometimes very difficult to understand. But we still have two race weekends ahead of us and we want to make another statement with a podium finish!"

The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup participants are now heading into the summer break, with the international one-make cup resuming on 31 August in Zandvoort. Proton Huber Competition will then be back on the grid with four cars, as Daniel Roos will be making a guest appearance. The Swede already competed with the team on the dune circuit last year and has already made guest appearances in the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland at Imola and Zandvoort this year. In the second race of the German Cup this year, he finished a strong seventh at Zandvoort. Proton Huber Competition will continue next weekend with the German Carrera Cup at the Nürburgring.
