Robert de Haan starts from pole position at the season's highlight in Monaco

The front row of the grid for round two of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup season will be shared by Dutchman Robert de Haan from the BWT Lechner Racing team and Porsche Junior Theo Oeverhaus. The championship leader from Germany rides for Proton Huber Competition.

Last weekend in Imola, Italy, both BWT Lechner Racing drivers retired on the first lap due to an accident through no fault of their own. On Sunday, Robert de Haan will start the second round of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup in Monaco from pole position. His teammate Marvin Klein qualified third. "Strong performance by the team after the drama of Imola – we're back where we belong!" said a delighted De Haan. The 18-year-old Dutchman is the reigning rookie champion of the international one-make cup with the 375 kW (510 hp) Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.

Only Porsche Junior Theo Oeverhaus was able to separate the BWT-Lechner Racing duo. The man from Osnabrück, who competes in the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup of Proton Huber Competition, was only 55 thousandths of a second short of De Haan's best time. Behind Oeverhaus, Keagan Masters from the Ombra Racing team will start the 17-lap sprint in the streets of Monte-Carlo. The South African, fourth fastest in qualifying, stood on the podium in third place exactly one year ago.

A qualifying session with interruptions

The 30-minute qualifying session was briefly interrupted three times each time so that the marshals could safely recover Cup nine-elevens stranded after driving errors. "That's exactly what I expected. That's why I concentrated on setting a fast lap as early as possible on my second set of tyres," de Haan gave an insight into his tactics for qualifying. "I was one of the drivers who had to abort what was probably my fastest lap due to a red flag. But after the retirement at Imola, the most important thing for me is to score as many points as possible this time," said Marvin Klein. And Theo Oeverhaus was lucky once and unlucky once. "After an interruption, I was the first to come out of the pit lane, immediately caught a clear lap and was able to set the second-best time. After the next break, I was at the back of the queue. So, of course, there was no thought of improvement."

The third row of the grid is shared by the second Porsche Junior, Alessandro Ghiretti from France (Schumacher CLRT) and Dutchman Huub van Eijndhoven (Team GP Elite). His compatriot Jaap van Lagen (Proton Huber Competition), who won the Supercup race in Monaco exactly ten years ago, was dissatisfied with his position outside the top 10. As the fastest rookie, Dirk Schouten secured eighth place on the grid. The Supercup rookie from the Netherlands drives a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup fielded by Dinamic Motorsport.

Formula 1 legends Mika Häkkinen and David Coulthard visit the Supercup

The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup hosted a "Legend Talk" in Monte Carlo with former Formula 1 drivers Mika Häkkinen and David Coulthard. Häkkinen has a special connection to the Supercup: The future double world champion (1998 and 1999) is the only VIP driver in the history of the one-make cup to have stood on the top step of the podium twice in guest starts: in 1993 in Monaco and at the Hungaroring just outside the Hungarian capital Budapest.

"I had never driven a nine-eleven before my guest start in Monaco, not even on the road," Mika Häkkinen opened the panel discussion. Fortunately for me, the Cup car of the 1993 season was a technically relatively simple racing car. In addition, the engineers and mechanics from Porsche helped me a lot. As a result, I was able to keep up with the fastest right away and was already at the front in qualifying."
