Robert de Haan achieves first victory in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup in Monaco

With 1st place for Robert de Haan, one of the shortest races in the 32-year history of the Porsche Supercup ended in Monaco. The Dutchman from the BWT Lechner Racing team crossed the finish line after only four classified laps ahead of Porsche Junior Theo Oeverhaus. The German, who competes for Proton Huber Competition, thus defended the lead in the standings. Next weekend, the strong Porsche 911 GT3 Cup will start the third round in Barcelona, Spain.

"Nobody will take this victory away from me. The fact that I am on the top step of the podium for the first time here of all places made this day even more special," said Robert de Haan after the award ceremony within sight of the marina in Monte-Carlo. The 18-year-old Dutchman, reigning rookie champion of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, had started from pole position. In the sprint to the first corner, he was able to defend this position against Porsche Junior Theo Oeverhaus and turned into the uphill section towards Casino as the leader.

Behind De Haan and Oeverhaus, the duel for third place ended with two spinning cars. Behind it, a traffic jam formed, in which there were further minor touches and which finally blocked the track. In order to be able to safely recover the stranded Cup nine-eleven, the race was stopped. After a break of around 25 minutes, the safety car guided the reduced field around the circuit for the restart. In the run-up to the subsequent Monaco Grand Prix, however, only three more laps remained. Due to the shortened distance, the front-placed teams can only look forward to half the number of points.

"As a result, I was only able to extend my lead in the table over the direct pursuers a little. On the other hand, Robert didn't make up that much ground on me either," Porsche Junior Theo Oeverhaus took a pragmatic view of the matter. The 20-year-old from Osnabrück continues to lead the overall standings, De Haan is not among the top 5.

Among the drivers who had hoped for more points was Alessandro Ghiretti. The Porsche Junior from France, who drives for the Schumacher CLRT team, came out of the turmoil of the first lap unscathed. "I saw that the two cars in front of me were touching. Because there was a little space to the right of it, I was able to slip through unscathed," he said. In the course of the later sprint, Ghiretti tried everything to get past Theo Oeverhaus. In the end, however, he had to settle for third place.

Behind Ghiretti, Dutchman Huub van Eijndhoven (Team GP Elite) and Mikel Azcona Troyas crossed the finish line. The Spaniard from the Spanish team Hadeca Racing had used the free Saturday of the Monaco weekend to contest a qualifying run for the upcoming 24-hour race at the Nürburgring. "That was a bit stressful, of course, but luckily all the flights were on time."

Dirk Schouten wins the rookie classification

With sixth place, Dutchman Dirk Schouten secured victory in the rookie classification. "During my evasive manoeuvre because of the accident in front of me, my race car touched the crash barrier very slightly. Fortunately without consequences," revealed the Supercup rookie from the Dinamic Motorsport team.

"Today has shown once again why racing on the Grand Prix circuit in Monaco is one of the most unpredictable things motorsport has to offer. The Porsche Supercup has been part of this special challenge since 1993. Congratulations to Robert de Haan on his first victory in our one-make cup. I hope we'll all experience a less nerve-wracking third round in Barcelona next weekend," commented Oliver Schwab, Project Manager Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.
