Three drivers to start racing for children’s engines

Racing for Children’s, presented by Medical Properties Trust and in partnership with Kelly-Moss Road and Race, is proud to announce Kay Van Berlo, Michael McCarthy and Riley Dickinson are all officially Racing For Children’s Porsche Carrera Cup North America 2022 season drivers.

In 2021, Racing For Children’s simultaneously had two different cars and two different drivers competing in two different series. With a first-place championship in one series and a second-place season finish in the other, for 2022 they’ve decided to up the ante. Racing For Children’s will have THREE different Porsche 911 GT3s, piloted by three different drivers.

Yes, that’s three cars and drivers on the same tracks - in the same races - at the same time. All three cars with carry the Racing For Children’s livery featuring handprints of kids in treatment for childhood cancers and blood disorders at Children’s of Alabama, which has become one of the most recognized Porsche liveries worldwide.

Kay Van Berlo, 21, is “beyond excited” to be returning with Racing For Children’s and Kelly-Moss Road and Race for a second season. Originally of the Netherlands and currently a college student in Miami, Van Berlo began racing karts at the age of eight and made his debut in racecars in 2018. In 2021, this eager and skilled young driver captured the second-place podium in the Pro Class of the inaugural Porsche Carrera Cup North America Series – at tracks he’d never driven on before. This year he says he wants to continue “this steep learning curve and make it an even better season than last year.” Van Berlo wants to finish what he started in 2021 in the Racing For Children’s #3 992 GT3 by winning the championship for the kids in treatment at Children’s of Alabama.

Michael McCarthy is also returning for a second season with Racing For Children’s and Kelly-Moss Road and Race. A 22-year-old, full-time college student from Clearwater, FL, McCarthy began racing in karts at the age of nine and continued to do so even after transitioning to auto racing in 2014. Having garnered many race wins and championships in both karts and racecars, McCarthy paired with KMR in 2021, and piloted the Racing For Children’s #7 991.2 GT3 to 11 poles and 11 wins for the season. McCarthy captured the platinum class and overall championship of the inaugural Porsche Sprint Cup Challenge North America. McCarthy eagerly anticipates stepping into a brand-new Porsche 992 in the Carrera Cup North America series this spring. Even more so, he is excited to continue his relationship with Racing For Children’s and the children he met last season saying, “I’m proud to represent such an important charity that impacts the lives of children and families in such a positive way.“

New to the Racing For Children’s team is Riley Dickinson of Austin, Texas. Dickinson is a former Hurley Haywood Scholarship Winner who started karting at age seven and transitioned to racecars in 2018. The 19-year-old finished fourth in the Pro Class of the 2021 Porsche Carrera Cup North America series while driving for Team Hardpoint but is switching to Kelly-Moss for the 2022 season. “Kelly-Moss Road and Race has shown year after year that they are the premier team in the North American Porsche Cup system,” says Dickinson. He is grateful for the opportunity to join the KMR family and to become part of team Racing For Children’s. Dickinson’s #53 992 GT3 will be sponsored by both Medical Properties Trust and Porsche Austin.

While each driver will race individually toward a championship finish, they are also racing together – as a team – knowing that every lap raced and every checkered flag waived inspires kids to win their races with cancer. Racing For Children’s will also pair each driver with an honorary crew chief, a child currently in the hospital’s support programs, to compete in a special fundraising initiative off the track.

Racing For Children’s was established by Birmingham area motorsports enthusiasts and Children’s of Alabama supporters as a means to distract kids in treatment with hot laps at Barber Motorsports Park. It evolved into an awareness and funding platform to support programs and research for children battling childhood cancers and blood disorders. Since 2010, Racing For Children’s has hosted an annual fundraising dinner and weekend events for Children’s of Alabama kids during the Honda Indy Grand Prix at Barber Motorsports Park. That tradition will continue this year and tickets are already available.

In 2017, Racing For Children’s partnered with Jeff Stone of Kelly-Moss Road and Race, bringing Stone’s expertise with Porsche racing and his young driver development program to the team. He has found and coached the RFC team drivers since 2017. Drivers who have since won four championships in the past five years, and two others finished in 2nd. Stone, also a native of Clearwater, has had his eye on Michael McCarthy for almost a decade and knew he’d be a good fit with Racing For Children’s. Stone was equally impressed with Kay Van Berlo and knew he’d do well in the Carrera Cup series. The race against cancer is dear to the heart of Jeff Stone, who lost a brother to the disease, and the same can be said for the rest of the partners and crew of Kelly-Moss Road and Race who all passionately dedicate time and resources toward the cause.

Racing For Children’s continues to race Porsche 911 GT3s at tracks all across America. The 2022 Carrera Cup North America season spans from the drop of the first green flag on March 16th at Sebring through the wave of the championship checkered flag on October 1st at Road Atlanta. Races can be viewed via various platforms with IMSA and NBCSports, and fans are welcome to attend races at each track. Having raised more than $2 million dollars to date, Racing For Children’s knows that cancer doesn’t wait. The race to fund research and find a cure doesn’t stop. And neither do we. Who will come out on top? You’ll have to follow along and find out but Kay Van Berlo, Michael McCarthy and Riley Dickinson along with our honorary crew chiefs and kids at Children’s of Alabama will say the answer is quite simple. We ALL are!
