Character-building weekend for Proton Huber Competition

The fourth race weekend in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup is now behind Proton Huber Competition. The international one-make series made a guest appearance at the Red Bull Ring, with four Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars lining up on the grid in Styria. In addition to regular drivers Theo Oeverhaus, Jaap van Lagen and Gus Burton, guest driver Jakub Knoll from the Czech Republic lined up for the Hofkirchen-based team for the first time.

It became clear early on that the race weekend near Graz would be difficult. Oeverhaus, Burton and van Lagen had to start the race from positions 12, 13 and 14.

The race was also shortened for a curious reason and started around 40 minutes late. After the previous support race, a tow truck got stuck with its crane under an advertising bridge, causing it to collapse onto the track. After the clean-up work, the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup race finally got underway.

For Theo Oeverhaus, who started the race as the championship leader, the race was already over in the third lap. A competitor misjudged and hit the Osnabrück native. It was a bitter end for Oeverhaus. He was pushed into a gravel bed in the first lap and fell far behind. The Porsche Junior lost the championship lead and slipped back to third place in the overall standings.

Burton and Supercup veteran van Lagen made up a lot of places in the race and were running in the front midfield for much of the race. However, in the final lap, there was a collision between the two teammates, causing both drivers to fall far behind. In the end, van Lagen finished 15th and scored one point, while Burton remained pointless in 18th place.

"We obviously put ourselves in an unfortunate position in qualifying and started the race in the middle of the danger zone. Theo didn't get off to the best start, so we need to work on that and give him a better feel for the car again. Gus and Jaap drove a great race right up to the last lap. An incident between teammates is never nice, and we need to analyse exactly what happened so that it doesn't happen again,‘ said Michael Dirsch, who heads the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup programme at Proton Huber Competition. ’We're all heading home now and want to come back stronger at Spa."

The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup continues on the last weekend in July, when the racing series visits Spa-Francorchamps. This coming weekend, Proton Huber Competition will first compete in the highlight of the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Germany season at the Norisring in Nuremberg.
