Double victory and lead in the standings in Austria
The second race weekend of the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland took place at the Red Bull Ring in Austria. Proton Competition can look back on a successful weekend.
Immediately following the season opener of the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland, the second round of the season was on the schedule at the Red Bull Ring. Following a positive season opener, Proton Competition travelled to Styria in high spirits and once again fielded five Porsche 911 Cups.
The first race on Saturday afternoon turned into a real thriller: the race at the Spielberg circuit was characterised by exciting and fierce battles. But in the end, the team from Hofkirchen came out on top: Porsche Junior Marcus Amand won by the narrowest of margins ahead of his team-mate Keagan Masters. The two Proton Competition cars were separated by just 0.168 seconds. The perfect day for the team was rounded off by Gustav Bergström’s victory in the Rookie class. Dylan Yip secured further vital points by finishing eleventh overall and fourth in the rookie class.
“It’s fantastic for me to win at the Red Bull Ring. It was a close race and I really had to fight. The key moment was my start, when I managed to overtake the pole-setter,” said Amand after the race.
In Sunday’s race too, Keagan Masters and Marcus Amand were involved in the battle for the top positions. Masters took second place from his team-mate at the halfway point of the race. The two fast Porsche drivers finished the race in second and third places after half an hour. The race ended bitterly for Dylan Yip, who was battling for victory in the rookie class in the closing stages but was innocently pushed off the track by a rival. Gustav Bergström finished the race in second place in the class. After a difficult start to the season, the Swede was thus able to demonstrate his talent on both race days at the Red Bull Ring. Team-mate Daniel Ros finished twelfth on Sunday.
After four of 16 races this season, South African Masters leads the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland championship. “We had a strong race weekend as Team Proton Competition. Things also went very well for me personally with the overall lead,” Masters noted with satisfaction. The popular and spectacular one-make cup continues at Spa-Francorchamps from 15 to 17 May.
