Pole position for Porsche Junior Theo Oeverhaus at the season opener in Imol
Pole position for Theo Oeverhaus at the opening round of the 2025 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola: The 20-year-old Porsche Junior from the Proton Huber Competition team set the fastest lap in qualifying on Saturday. From second and third starting positions, Ariel Levi and Kas Haverkort will start tomorrow's sprint race over 15 laps. Both compete for the GP Elite team. The best rookie was Flynt Schuring from the Schumacher CLRT team in sixth place.
"It couldn't have gone any better," beamed Theo Oeverhaus after qualifying for the first race of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup season. In a thrilling final phase, the 20-year-old from Osnabrück from the Proton Huber Competition team secured his first pole position of the year in Imola. "I managed to put together a good lap. The car felt great, many thanks to my team. Now I can't wait to go into the race – and hopefully win it! I'd have to have the speed to do it," said Oeverhaus after setting his first best time in qualifying in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. The second Porsche Junior, Frenchman Alessandro Ghiretti from the Schumacher CLRT team, qualified his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup for ninth place on the grid.
In addition to Oeverhaus, Ariel Levi will start the sprint race over 15 laps from the front row of the grid on Sunday. The Israeli had to admit defeat by only the blink of an eye of 32 thousandths of a second. "Qualifying went really well," said the GP Elite rider. It was hotter today than during yesterday's practice, which suited me. My mechanics made some changes to the suspension set-up before switching to the new set of tyres, and it worked well. My goal for tomorrow? Winning, of course!"
With 3rd place on the grid, Levi's stablemate Kas Haverkort also secured a brilliant starting position for the race on the 4.909-kilometre Grand Prix circuit in northern Italy. "Everything is fine," reported the Dutchman. I was less satisfied with the first set of tyres, but that wasn't the decisive one. With the new Michelins, the car felt great. That gave me the confidence to attack fully. Now I'll see how it goes tomorrow. In the Supercup, it is important to finish on the podium or at least in the top five in all races. Nevertheless, of course, I'm going for a win!"
Behind Haverkort, two other co-favorites were classified with the Frenchman Marvin Klein from the Austrian team BWT Lechner Racing and the German Alexander Tauscher from the Italian Target team.
As the best rookie, Flynt Schuring put his nine-eleven on sixth on the grid. "I'm satisfied," said the Dutchman from the French Schumacher CLRT racing team. With the first set of tyres, I first tried to find a good rhythm and explore the track limits so as not to risk a penalty. I then managed a good lap with the second set of tyres – only in the last sector could I have gotten a little more out of it. I'm optimistic for tomorrow. I'll do my best and then we'll see what happens."
Robert de Haan won both races of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland at the same venue in April. On Sunday, the Dutchman will start the Supercup season opener from seventh place in the second Porsche 911 GT3 Cup fielded by BWT Lechner Racing. Next to him will be Frenchman Mathys Jaubert from the French racing team Martinet by Alméras. The top 10 is completed by the youngest rider in the field, the 18-year-old German Janne Stiak from Target SRL. The enormous balance among the participants is evidenced by the short time gaps: around two tenths of a second separate the starting positions three and eleventh.
The opening race of the 2025 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup will start on Sunday at 11.45 hrs. The programme includes 15 laps over a total distance of 73.63 kilometres or a maximum race duration of 30 minutes plus one lap.
