Two Porsches score points in the wet race in Tokyo

António Félix da Costa and Pascal Wehrlein of the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team finished 7th and 13th respectively in Saturday's rainy race of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in Tokyo.

They had started from 11th (da Costa) and 17th (Wehrlein) after qualifying was cancelled due to heavy rain. The starting grid was based on the result of the second free practice session.

In difficult track conditions during the race, both drivers initially made up positions. The unfavourable grid positions, the mandatory pit stop for the pit boost, safety car phases and a race interruption meant additional challenges for the Porsche works team.

With Dan Ticktum, the next Porsche crossed the finish line in 5th place. The Cupra Kiro customer team achieved its best result to date with the Porsche 99X Electric WCG3. For Ticktum, it was his second-best result in Formula E so far. Both da Costa's points and ticktums count for Porsche in the manufacturers' standings. Here, the two best-placed drivers of a brand are evaluated.

Quotes on the Tokyo E-Prix

Florian Modlinger, Overall Project Manager Formula E: "The first day of racing was tough and challenging as it was wet all day here in Tokyo – so wet that qualifying had to be cancelled. The starting grid was determined by the result of the second free practice session. Here, Pascal's 350 kW laps were affected by red and yellow flag phases. We had to adjust our race strategy accordingly. António improved from 11th to 7th place in the race – a good performance. Pascal also moved up from 17th to 13th place. With a regular qualifying session or dry conditions, more would have been possible. I'm happy with the car, the strategy and the team's execution. The red flag would have suited our strategy better at another time, but you can't influence that. Very good work also by Dan Ticktum, who collected points for 5th place in the manufacturers' championship. Now we have to focus on being competitive tomorrow in hopefully dry conditions."

Pascal Wehrlein, Porsche works driver (#1): "It wasn't easy to move up from 17th place. Visibility was poor, but we were still able to work our way forward. When we had more space, we were fast. But the whole day was a bit unfortunate. I'm looking forward to tomorrow when it's dry and we have a race under normal conditions. Let's see what we can achieve."

António Félix da Costa, Porsche works driver (#13): "In the wrong place at the wrong time – that's my feeling at the moment. Today we saved points. I had a bad first lap and dropped back. But despite the wet on the track, we had a good pace and were able to move forward. 7th place was what we were able to achieve today – damage limitation. Maybe 6th place would have been possible. But we seem to cope well with adversity and difficult situations. Tomorrow is another race. The car was fast here in the dry. I'm looking forward to tomorrow and hopefully a good comeback."
