Proton Huber Competition defends lead in Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup

Despite a difficult weekend in Barcelona, Proton Huber Competition driver Theo Oeverhaus continues to lead the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup championship.

Third race weekend of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup within three weeks. After the season opener in Imola and the season highlight in Monaco, the international one-make cup made its first appearance in Barcelona since 2020. Proton Huber Competition lined up with its three regular drivers Theo Oeverhaus, Jaap van Lagen and Gus Burton. In collaboration with EST1 Racing, the team also fielded Alexander Reimann's Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.

In qualifying, Porsche Junior Oeverhaus initially set the fastest time, but the joy was short-lived as the lap time was disallowed due to a track limit violation. The team's attempts to appeal were unsuccessful, meaning that Oeverhaus had to start the race from 13th on the grid, which is a difficult task on the overtaking-friendly circuit on the outskirts of the Spanish metropolis.

In a hard-fought race, the fast driver from Osnabrück managed to improve his position by several places. With an exciting duel full of spectacular manoeuvres, the talented young driver provided one of the absolute highlights of the race. In the end, Oeverhaus was classified in ninth place, defending his lead in the standings.

‘I made the best of my poor starting position,’ explained 20-year-old Oeverhaus after the race. ‘I had a lot of tough battles. The problem is that you get understeer behind another car, which is particularly hard on the front tyres. So I basically drove the entire race behind Alex Tauscher. We want to get more out of it in the upcoming races.’

Veteran Jaap van Lagen also finished in the points in 15th place, while Gus Burton and Alexander Reimann missed out on points.

After three of eight races in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, Theo Oeverhaus leads the championship with 43 points. The Proton Huber Competition driver has a 9.5-point lead in the overall standings. The team from Hofkirchen in Bavaria also continues to lead the team standings.

‘Unfortunately, it wasn't the race weekend we had hoped for,’ said Michael Dirsch, who heads the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup programme at Proton Huber Competition, after the race weekend in Barcelona. ‘After our appeal against Theo's penalty in qualifying was unsuccessful, we knew it wasn't going to be an easy race, especially as our other cars had to start from further back. Theo managed to improve his position by a few places in the race, but that was all we could do in Barcelona. We are happy that Theo was able to defend his championship lead and will do everything we can to come back stronger at the Red Bull Ring at the end of June!’

The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup will continue on the last weekend of June at the Red Bull Ring in Styria. For Austrian-born Christoph Huber, the race in Styria will be his home race of this year's Supercup season. Before that, the Bavarian team will compete in the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland in Zandvoort in the Netherlands this coming weekend.
